[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is an old print from my archives , taken 20 years ago. I watched some of the tourists being punted along the beautiful Avon River in Christchurch on a warm day of austral summer. Though it was a quiet period at mid- day still some persons sat in a punt to be glided down the lazy river , sinking back into the cushions, relaxing and taking in the sights , an iconic experience through the beautiful historic inner city.
A punt is flat , has no keel , is about 6 meters long by 1 meter wide and is propelled by the punter by means of a 5 meters long pole , the propulsion method is known simply as punting .I find interesting to read that punting originated as a means of fishing , dredging and carrying all kinds of materials ,in other words a work boat. Punts can be found in Nelson and Christchurch.
I converted to sepia then desaturated towards grey removing 85% of sepia to retain 15% of it , curves adjusted , removed some noise in Neatimage, sharpened and framed,

Good composition Carol,nice scene with the boat,it could be even darker for the perfect result.

Hi Carol,
Nice shot, well captured with the punt going past and the B&W conversion suits it well. Maybe fade the sharpness a tiny bit to try and get rid of the jagged lines on the side of the boat and the boardwalk, but that's nothing really. Wonderfully composed and well exposed. Nicely preserved for a 20-year old photo.

Haha, that's 20 years ago?? Having been there a couple of weeks back, I can tell you little - if anything - has changed. You'd get pretty much the same shot from the same position now.

Nice flow through the frame, although I would prefer to see it in colour - I know you were going for the "old" (older than 20 years!) effect, but the colours of this scene would be delightful!

I really like this shot and the natural lines in this scene. Nice detail throughout the entire shot and the B&W color is very good here. Nice work.

Hi Carol

The Avon River provides a superb lead in line & good linear perspective, & the punt & tourists add a splendid focal point. Excellent tonal range contrast & sharpness, in this good vintage b&w image. Tfs!

My good man, where have you not been?!? Seriously, I would think your list of countries visited would be up there among the highest of anyone on this site! Very impressive .. and enviable! Have you ever counted how many countries you've been to - just for the sake of curiousity? I did this recently when my friend from Spanish class mentioned that she would be visiting her 50th country on her 50th birthday. My number is pitifully low by comparison!
Your scanning of these old prints is also impressive. Love the smooth look, finish and tones in this shot ... it adds to the peaceful, serene feel. Very interesting and informative note too ..

Well - it's changed a little.. Nice to see some archival B&W shots (here's me thinking of 20 years gone by as positively antique now).

Nice compo and the high contrast suits the summer feel to the photo..
