~ Dawn Over Mount Cook ~

I took this photo during a flight from Christchurch to Australia back in 2006. The flight plan took us across the Southern Alps which form a raised mountainous backbone stretching most the length of the New Zealand South Island.

I was reading the in-flight magazine when the flight’s captain announced we were approaching Mount Cook (Aoraki) National Park and that Mount Cook itself could be clearly seen lit up. This photo was one of several I was able to take of the spectacle below us.

Mount Cook is New Zealand’s highest peak, measuring 3,754 metres. It is one of 19 peaks measuring in excess of 3000 metres in height within Mount Cook National Park; a very impressive landscape, picturesque and photogenic.

Mount Cook itself may be approached by road (State Highway 80) which passes Lake Pukaki, a lake created by glacial melt water. Having seen this stunning snow-capped mountain from high above at dawn was a special treat for me. It was moment I will always cherish.

Wow, what an amazing view! The sun against the tips of the mountains is perfect. Very nice colours and clarity, especially for being shot through glass. Impressive work Martyn.

Love that beautiful light on Mt Cook..and the pink tinges of the clouds.
