[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
A couple of hours spent on a gusty nor-west afternoon, watching the planes bob and weave and lurch as they tried to land at Christchurch airport.

Earlier that day I'd stopped into my favourite camera shop in Merivale and bought a Cokin tobacco-tinted grad filter - just the thing to bring new life to dull grey overcast skies.

Probably overused it in this shot, but the excitement of experimentation can be quite overwhelming. ;)

rew i also use this filter personnley i think you have used it well here realy works with sky
tfs bryan

Very cool effect Rew. The tobacco filter looks like it was a good investment. Reminds me of the recent dust storm in Australia. Great composition with the descending plane, I like the inclusion of the fence line too - Adds extra interest and gives the image some 'depth'. Might have to invest in one of those filters myself, looks like fun.

TFS,
Scott.

Cool effect of the filter Rew, the composition is outstanding. F/9 gives a little blurry to the fence at the front while leaving other part of the image sharp. Well done and tfs

Buddy

Nice layers in the sky. Plane is nice and sharp.

The filter gives what would have been a dull sky some life and I don't think it is too intrusive. Like the inclusion of the fence here and the wind sock which adds to the interest.

Good to see you doing somethin different.

OMG Rew ... bobbing and weaving and lurching??? Remind me never to fly into Christchurch. Have I heard correctly that that's a particularity bad airport to land at?
Okay - to the photo ... I really like the effect of the tobacco filter .. has added a very cool tone to the sky. Someday I'll have a real camera, and will be able to buy toys like that.
I like the diagonal of the fence in the FG too, and the opposing diagonal of the hillside in the BG.
Great job on this one.

Hi Rew,

I like the effect the filter lends to the sky. The receding lines from the barbed-wire fence are interesting as well. The plane's good and sharp, with nice blur on the props.

Best regards,
Werner

Hi Rew,
Hi Rew,
I like the atmospher of this photo! The faded tones works so nicely! The filter added a nice mood at the image.
I don't have this kind of filter, but you gave me a good idea. With the gray wintery skies we have, here, this seems a good way to change a bit their dull moods.
Terrific composition with the leaned fence ant the placement of the plane in the right third!
Excellent experimentation not at all overwhelming,IMHO!
Annie

Hi Rew,
Great perspective and good use of the filter.

Rew,

Very nice warm tones created by the filter. Well managed shutter speed to capture
the plane sharp and clear. Been looking all over Dubai these GND filters, unfortunately
not availble. A good addition to landscape photography. Well composed REW!

Hi Rew, A dramatic result and the tinted lens sure makes the sky a much more interesting colour. Good to hear about this and see such a strong result. Inclusion of the fence in the foreground adds interest. TFS. Murray.

Hi Rew,
The aircraft does not appear to be straight and level! I suppose the passengers were in for an exciting landing.
As for the filter, I use this very often - but in post-processing using Photoshop or Picasa. It is indeed a very useful tool for bringing some color to dull skies.

As for the photo, the fence is a problem, but what can you do!

Beautiful effect.
Lovely old feel.

thanks,

I have to comment on this one Rew as I've flown into CHC a few times myself and I used to fly the same type of aircraft depicted here (ATR42 or 72) in the 90s albeit in Europe... Always more fun when the wind blows, well ,from my POV ;-)

As you say with regards to the filter - possibly overused but it's always fun to have a new toy.. I'm sure it'll work well with sunset skies etc. Pic's nice and sharp and fence works well as a lead in to the distant hill. It's Signal Hill is it? I can't remember..

Cheers
David

I am new in this field to comment but a nice shot, how ,if you let the plane to get a little nearer.thanks

Hi Rew,

A new words for me .. . tobacco sky . . and also new to me there is a grad tobacco filter . . What was the original color of the sky?
I like capturing planes . . which I did when I was at SIngapore last September . .
You did much better here by showing fences of airport . .
Glad to see your gallery again . .

Tfs,
Tjutjut

Hi Rew!

Very interesting composition of the shot! Colours are really beautiful for this shot!

Hi Rew,
Güzel yakalanmış bir komposizyon.
Çitlerin olması fotoğrafı daha zenginleştirmiş.
Molto bene fotografie.
Bravo!

well timed Rew, good use of the filter.

Hello Rew,
Amazing composition. Excellent routed colors.

Lucja

Wow Rew...amazing effect here with your new filter and looks very well executed to me, giving the image a vintage feel to it. The DOf utilised is very creative in capturing the leading lines running along the barb wire fence adding to the original POV and makes the plane look much closer than it is to the point where you were standing! Very well executed shot and TFS!

Dilshan

I wondered about the title, but understand better after reading your note:) The effect it provides works very well for this subject/image, warming the hard metal and industrial look and lending a softer mood to the light quality. I hope you keep working with it and experimenting on a variety of uses.
