Cox's Creek
Auckland

Cox's Creek is an urban freshwater creek/stream, running through the inner city of Auckland through mangroves into the Waitemata Harbour at Cox's Bay.

The creek has had over a century of gross pollution -- first from a wool scour, a tannery and then a soap factory. Today, it continues to be grossly polluted as a result of overflows from the combined sewer and stormwater system set up in the large catchment of the creek.

Friends of Cox's Bay was formed in 1989. The creek is such a mess! They felt their first priority was getting the storm water and sewer systems separated. And they see their role as one of keeping pressure on the council to do this.

They monitor resource consent applications as there is an enormous amount of apartment construction happening in the catchment. These will put more pressure on an infrastructure which already cannot cope. In 1997, we circulated a petition calling for council to pace a moratorium on all such consents and projects until the separation is completed. 2,700 people signed the petition.

As you can see in the photo, Cox’s Bay is a big mudflat at low tide. Notice Cox’s Creek as it trickles out to the Waitemata Harbour, and see the pollution and rubbish that is stuck in the mud. I pass this way often as a son of mine lives close by. There are boats moored on this mudflat and I don’t think I have seen many of them ever used.

It was a dull day yesterday, and this place always makes me think of it as a dreary and dirty place to be.

This has a certain atmosphere...Nicely portrayed...

Beautiful curves and color tones, Janice. It does look desolate. Nice!

Gayle :)

An amazing scenery Janice. Powerful and impactful image. The leading eye is well placed. Stunning! Bravo! I really like it!

Oh, I'd be there in the dirty and dull Kiwi summer instead of the sunny chilly winter!! :)
Hey Janice from the POV I presume you were standing in the knee-deep mud!!? :)) ...Everything for a nice photo! I like how the creek leading the eyes to Cox's Bay! TfS

It's high time humanity stops raping this planet, Janice. This is a nice picture to illustrate that statement, mainly because of the garbage in the creek, but the flat, muted colours help too...
Well done, TFS

I used to live in Te Atatu Peninsuala (back when it was still called Te Atatu North!) and the "beach" there looked like this also. Except there were a couple of car wrecks on the mudflats too.

Can't speak for what it looks like now - I left in 1994.

As for your photo - I like what you've done here. The dull grey dreary day suits the subject matter perfectly. You've also provided a useful note to explain. The cloud formations combined with the path of the stream, provide some visual interest.

Hi Janice,
Very nice shot, The POV is very good and creates a very good composition. the left over water on this mud is leading us thru the photo. Very well done.
Luc

So sad Janice when some councils fail to maintain an area. Wonderfully composed photo and the colouring really conveys what you have explained in your notes. TFS
David
PS a couple of councils close to Launceston have on going sewerage problems. Raw sewerage spilling into pristine streams is not a very good look.

Hi Janice

I like the wonderful s curve & sepia like color tones. Excellent sharpness, & an environmentally friendly note! Well done!

Yuk! Brave of you to present this rather than a sunset or a kitten in a basket. Your intent is clear, even if the scenery isn't. I just hope that you were on a 'bridge over muddy waters' rather than knee-deep in it, as it doesn't look too healthy.
Regardless of all the environmental concerns, it is still a technically good shot, with the S-curve and the proportions being A1. I congratulate you for both aspects. 9.94/10

Water -Coast lines.. its something that keeps us
going worlwide.. lol.. Nice again Janice..
I like how you did the stream towards the Ocean..

Hi Janice,
I think you have managed to convey the sense of desolation of the area. I think the effect and the mood would have magnified if you had turned the photo into sepia. The little bit of blue-grey sky sort of clash with rest of the monochromic image. Good composition.

Beautiful composition...!!!!
I know that it is colored, but it is seeming a great sépia!
Very well executed.

sorry I have been so busy lately I really don't have much time to spend on tl , I have been off to the beach from Wed to Mon for the past weeks, whiz home pay bills and off again.

lovely photo Janice, have a great week

Christine.

Whatever...but it's still a nice place. I like the abandoned mood only the more emphasised by the lack of sea under the boats.
The tones give the mood to the pic. Really nice work.

Dawn.

The most peculiar thing about this photo is it looks as if boats are on the land instead of water. Dramatic scenery. Making it B&W could intesify the feeling, I think.

Fantastic view.
I like POV, curves on the ground, and almost desaturated colours.
