Zephyranthes candida - ze-fer-AN-thes
Rain Lily, Fairy Lily, Zephyr Lily Family: Amaryllidaceae
I found these Zephyranthes candida, Rain, fairy, Zephyr lilies at the Auckland Botanical Gardens on Saturday. They were growing in a large pot about waist-high, and the display was beautiful.
Zephyranthes candida are bulbous perennials found in grasslands from North to South America. Their country of origin is Uruguay & Argentina, in the La Plata region. They are grown for their erect, funnel-shaped, and crocus-like flowers. Rain lilies flower from late spring to fall or when the foliage emerges from the soil and usually a few days after a rainstorm. They make excellent rock garden plants or do well in the front of sunny borders. They will grow in sun or partial shade. The foliage is deciduous and emerges every year. The rush-like leaves will reach 12 inches (30 cm) in containers or as landscape plants. Zephyranthes candida grows 4-8 inches in height. It bears pure white flowers 1.25 inches long that are rose tinged on the inside of the petals.
Zephyr is Greek for the south-west wind but what that has to do with these attractive flowers I do not know. Though it may flower and be gathered for decoration at Easter (in the Southern Hemisphere) it is not closely related to the Easter Lily (Lilium longiflorum).
