[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is the BLOOD LILY, APRIL FOOL or MARCH LILY, HAEMANTHUS COCCINEU
It’s flowerheads are like bright shaving brushes popping up from underground bulbs. They emerge between February and April in NZ, usually before the leaves appear. The flowerhead comprises 6-9 stiff, red spathe valves surrounding the 25-100 coral to scarlet flowers. The valves are mostly fleshy and may stand erect or sometimes be somewhat lax.

This plant always surprises us late summer. It just seems to pop up from nowhere, but then we realise that 6-9 months earlier, there were 2 ugly tongue-like leaves growing in the same place that seemed to grow and grow, and then rot away and disappear.

Wow, this looks great janice. The red and yellow go very well togeather..I like what you have done with the border, this is a busy shot and the border helps lead the eyes to the center of the shot. well done :)

Bravo!

It is flaming and it is so well captured... For a moment I really thought it was a shaving brush looking at the thumbnail - a special one... from Gillette... with some improved formula??? Well it turned out to be a better deal than that... ;-)

Great capture. Colors have come very well.

Hi there!
What a great macro shot! I love the colours and textured look of the shot. It almost has an abstract look, even though its a flower!
Well done!
