[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Avon River is a unique part of Christchurch City as it sustains a diverse plant and animal life and is a source of many recreational activities. It creates a soothing tranquility meandering through the heart of city and the botanical gardens.
Local Maori called the Avon River Te Kai o te Karoro. The Canterbury Association planned to call it the Shakespeare, but the Deans brothers who settled in Canterbury in 1843 named it the Avon after the stream on their grandparents' farm in Scotland and their name for the river survived.
Punting is one of the tourist activities. I tried it once and it was actually a lovely experience because you are looking at the city from a different perspective.
