Volcanoes of the Hauraki Gulf of Auckland, New Zealand

Motukorea and Rangitoto

I took this photo as I was sailing past this island last year after our holiday on Waiheke Island.

The dry looking island is Motukorea, aka Browns Island, a small volcanic island lying in the Hauraki Gulf, 1300 metres offshore from Auckland's eastern suburbs. Motukorea means Island Of The Oyster Catcher - a coastal bird species found on the island.

In the background you can see the tree covered island, Rangitoto, Auckland’s youngest volcano, aged about 600-700 years old / new.

Rangitoto is the Maori name derived from the phrase:
‘TE RANGI I TOTONGIA A TAMATEKAPUA –
THE DAY THE BLOOD OF TAMATEKAPUA WAS SHED’.

Volcanoes are a conspicuous feature of the Auckland city landscape. Within a radius of about 20km centred on Auckland city there are 49 volcanoes; this is the area referred to as the Auckland volcanic field .

HI Janice

Stunning panorama compo of this stunning vista. Beautiful. Looks like not enough wind that day for sailing but the fishing would doubtless have been top notch.

TFS,

Martyn

Good Evening Janice.
That sounds as a very pleasant trip, you made.
The dark looking volcano gives it an extra diamention.
Sea looks rather calm. I always interested in Volcanoes, as I'm a big fan of the ETNA, at Sicily.
Thanks for the good note you wrote here.
Groeten van Jan
