Vireya Rhododendron

She’s a beauty, don’t you think so? This is one of my Vireyas I photographed this week at home using Pam’s new lens – thanks Pam.

Now, I don’t want you to think that my garden is wonderful, just because I sometimes show you some of my pretty flowers. Because, I tell you, it isn’t!! I do have some nice plants stuck here and there that grow because they need no TLC (tender loving care). But I do not look after my plants much at all. I grow heaps of weeds and am always late pruning my roses and usually forget to spray them at all.

I have a few Vireyas growing and they seem to flower at any time of the year. This is one I had to move from the front of the house, away from the salt spray wind, to the back where is gets the late afternoon sun. It’s hardly grown in the last 10 years, but still flowers and flowers when it feels like it.

They come from the tropics and will do well through much of coastal NZ. In cooler areas they are often grown in containers and moved into sheltered positions in winter.

this is absolutely fantastic I have never seen this colour mine are all pink and variations on reds and purple. A truly lovely shot here with vivid colour and sharp detail.

Beautiful indeed. Love the way you compose this image, absolutly divine colours. The blue in the background contast well with those orange tones..and those green, purple, magenta, a full palette of colour in that shot. Great details. Well i guess i've found a new favorite.)))

Beautiful flower. Colours very strong and sharp detail.

I think this variety might be Simbu Sunset. I had 70 varieties of Vireya in my Auckland garden when I sold that property. One of my favourite plants for the sub-tropical garden and look great planted under a canopy of palms.
