It’s Still Summertime…

I took this photo on Thursday evening at nearly 6 pm. I had my wrong lens on and I was really too far away to show it clearly. I have cropped a lot off the original image.

You can see my daughter-in-law, Julie, on the wake board on the estuary at MANGAWHAI "The Place of Te Whai , where the streams meet" . The next piece of land after the sand dunes will be South America.

My husband and I went 95kms north last week to visit one of our sons and family and friends who were renting a holiday bach for a few weeks.

Mangawhai is a quiet little beach resort, nestled between the coast and beautiful rolling farmland, about an hour and a half north of Auckland, and just under an hour south of Whangarei on the eastern side of Northland.

The Mangawhai estuary is bordered by a sandy dune-field which you can see here. It changes constantly. For the photographer and artist this is a goldmine. The dunes and coastal foreshore are sites of numerous middens shell and refuse heaps. The oldest middens contain bones of the forest birds now extinct in the area, Maori axes and other artefacts have also been found.

The estuary is safe for swimming, but watch out for the outgoing tide near the mouth of the harbour. For the fisherman, the estuary provides many fish - mullet, parore, flounder, good sprat, the occasional pan sized snapper, and kahawai. There are cockles on the estuary mudflats and pipi further up the harbour. Limit 150 per person.

I spoke to my son today and they said they’d been out wake-boarding again on their boat, Annecy, and they alsocaught enough fish for dinner last night and tonight.

Today’s forecast:
Partly to mostly cloudy in the morning, becoming partly to mostly sunny in the afternoon. High 26°. UV index up to 6. Wind south-southwest around 11 kph.

I wish we were still there

Enjoy!!

Hi Janice

Nice layering into horizontal thirds, with the added bonus of the fg boat towing the water skier. Happy Easter!

Superb contrasts in size here!
The boat is quite dwarfed by the vastness of the sand

Hi Janice,
I like your composition of sea sandwiching the land. It had given your subject (the boat) a beautiful surroundings, unique indeed.

Nice PP which had resulted a neat and clear image despite the heavy cropping.

TFS,
Ramdan.

Wrong lens or not Janice it is still a very clear image. Good colour, well cropped and very crisp details. TFS,
David

Many thanks for your comment on ‘A well worn flight’...I was surprised that no others chose flights of steps/stairs.

Just go ahead and keep on trying to hold the sun....It seems to be working in some ways with spring snow here...but I love this and although I cannot even think of doing it any longer..I can remember...Nice memory for me!
Bob

Janice,

What a lovely seascape! The water is so vast and the boat looks so small. I love the perspective. It reminds me of a quote my grandfather, from Cypress, used to say; "Always respect the sea".

I also love the workshop photo of just the guys! It's great.

Spring has officially arrived in Georgia... I now have a sunburn from riding in my convertible for a few hours today.

tfs, Lisa

THe only man here is so tiny and seems so unimportant BUT he makes all measurements we need in this wide area. I like this 3 layer feeling; if the sand part was a bit darker it gave even more impact.
