Gross Pollution at Cox's Bay, Auckland

This is the mudflats at Cox’s Bay taken at low tide today. There is just a small grove of Mangoves still growing. The boats just rest on the mud twice a day. . .

My little Sony handbag camera has died and I have replaced it with this Panasonic DMC-TZ3.

Cox's Creek is an urban freshwater creek/stream, running through the inner city of Auckland through mangroves into the Waitemata Harbour at Cox's Bay.

The creek has had over a century of gross pollution -- first from a wool scour, a tannery and then a soap factory.

Today, it continues to be grossly polluted as a result of overflows from the combined sewer and stormwater system set up in the large catchment of the creek.

And at the beginning of this summer it has been noted that Cox's Bay is too dirty for safe swimming. There is something bad in the water at Cox's Bay. Testing of the water in Cox’s Bay last summer showed the Bacteria Enterococci reached levels 46 times higher than accepted under Environment Ministry rules. Enterococci are amongst the most antibiotic resistant bacteria isolated from humans and causes stomach and intestine illness, colds, influenza and skin, eye and ear infections.

Sounds great – doesn’t it?

Hi Janice

Neighbours in the TL Gallery! Fear not, the Thames in London is returning to it's former pristine state, after centuries of abuse. They've even recorded trout, salmon, & a whale, in the past decade. If the UK can do it, so can NZ! Good capture of the lifeless mudflat. Tfs!

Hi Janice,
Sad to know how the pollution ruin the nature's beauty. Sounds terrible, Janice!

Estimates suggest that nearly 1.5 billion people lack safe drinking water and that at least 5 million deaths per year can be attributed to waterborne diseases. With over 70 percent of the planet covered by oceans, people have long acted as if these very bodies of water could serve as a limitless dumping ground for wastes. Raw sewage, garbage, and oil spills have begun to overwhelm the diluting capabilities of the oceans, and most coastal waters are now polluted. Beaches around the world are closed regularly, often because of high amounts of bacteria from sewage disposal, and marine wildlife is beginning to suffer.

Sounds terrible.

Regards,
Ramdan.

Very sad!! A good picture though. I hope that this spot that could be so beautiful returns to it's earlier state. TFS

Good morning Janice!
Very well taken scenery from Cox Bay. Hopefully
some day, the grass will be greener and the fish will swim in the bay. Thanks for informative, but very sad story. Happy Easter to you and your family.
best regards
ziggy

....And why does the Auckland City council let this happen!!...Better ring John Banks! must get smelly in the summer there.

Good compo Janice.. What setting did you have your camera on to take this one... just wondered..Landscape ?..if I just put mine on AUTO it only seems to produce photos at f4. I see yours is F8., which is better for sharpness...I havent read the manual properly yet !!! (for my TZ3).

Good notes Janice.

Cheers
Dawn.

Your description fits the Tamar and a couple of local swimming holes Janice. An excellent POV with the creek meandering to th sea, good colour and the harsher light well handled. TFS,
David

PS I did notice browsing your images the other day that you had a new camera
