Gladiolus showing off their Colour Wheel - tints and shaded colours

In colour theory, a “tint” is the mixture of a color with white (also called a pastel colour), and a “shade” is the mixture of a colour with black.

Mixing with white increases lightness, while mixing with black reduces it.

Although in painting, “shade” refers to mixtures of colors with black, “shade” as often used colloquially refers to any variation of a color, whether light or dark, colorful or not.
(Wikipedia)

Here are some Gladioli flowers showing the pink colour of the petals with white paint added to it to give a paler shade. And then black is added to the stamens to give this darker, more purple shade.

Talk about a hard choice Helen – I was really happy to produce opposite colours in the colour wheel, but when I read what the “Tint and Shaded colour wheel” meant I had to stop what I had planned and begin again.

I refused to do a green scene and that is too easy to do down here. And I didn’t want to do another flower too, but they won out in the end.

I hope you all like it. . .

Hi Janice.

Wonderful and quite powerful pinks. Beautiful veining in the flowers and the black background / yellow centres give excellent depth and make them look 3 dimensional. Great piece of work. Paul.

Hi Janice,
Beautiful pink hues presented here. The texture of the flowers you have revealed are just lovely! The hint of yellow in the centre of the blooms adds a nice touch of brightness. Excellent contrast with the black background and a nice frame to finish. Well done!

Hi Janice

Beautiful delicate colours.
Very good macro shot.

Hi Janice, a pretty blend of colours in that spectrum. Excellent detail, well composed and nicely presented. 3 years after we moved in here a deep red gladdy popped up, this year another shade of red. I must lift them and place them in more accessible parts of the garden. TFS,
David
