Good Shepherd Church, Lake Tekapo, NZ

The Church of the Good Shepherd is situated on the shores of Lake Tekapo, Mackenzie Basin, Canterbury, South Island, New Zealand, where the view from the windows is spectacular.

It may look like the photo is crooked, but I have used the level of the water in the distance to get it correct. Water is never uneven, but the church is slightly out of kilter!!

What a view looking through the large panoramic window behind the altar giving breathtaking views of Lake Tekapo.

It has some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. That is why the area has become one of the most popular locations for weddings in the world, both for New Zealanders and for people from abroad.

I will post a photo of one bride at the Good Shepherd Church later on.

This unique stone church sits along the shores of Lake Tekapo on the South Island of NZ and people that attend this church can enjoy the view overlooking the lake from the inside.

Stained glass is not needed in the Church of the Good Shepherd as the clear glass windows provides a much better view than the stained glass would.

It was built in 1935 and the architect was Christchurch-based R.S.D. Harman (1896-1953). It was made of lakeside stone and oak so that it would last for years to come, which has proven true as the building is still a solid structure today.

There are still services held in the Church of the Good Shepherd in NZ at least once a month for the locals of the community. The community makes sure that the church is kept clean, all the maintenance of the grounds and the interior are kept up to date and a caretaker has been hired to do any repairs that are needed.

When visitors come to Lake Tekapo they take a vast amount of pictures of this historic church that sits along the banks of Lake Tekapo. It is said to be one of the most photographed buildings around the New Zealand region.

Hi Janice,

That architect had a great idea when designing this church of - de Goede Herder -.
Strange that the church is out of kilter...

It almost seemed if there was no glass at all, but then you see the reflection of the candle.

That South Island also seems very attractive!

Bonjour Janice,
Superbe photo!
Très belle ouverture sur le paysage d'une luminosité somptueuse. La lumière du contre-jour est bien perçue et rendue!
Bravo!

Hello Janice,
a lovely view beautifully framed. The light and shadows and the cross and candles create an unusual atmpshere against the backdrop of blue. Almost theatrical.

Bev

Hi Janice..this is a nicely composed and balanced shot...nice job on the exposure outside and inside. I have had trouble with that before.

Hi Janice, a super shot with good composition but I think the slope of the church window is too noticeable and it may have been better to make that level as the horizon on the lake is not well defined.
cheers

Quite original this one Janice, thanks to share it,

Iso.

I think whoever was conducting the service would get lost in that view too Janice. Very well composed and I love the use of window and altar to 'frame' the view. Lovely colour and good light. TFS,
David

Many thanks for your comment on ‘Smell the Flowers’. See his face sometime - probably. See him swing on that bush - not until I dog proof the fence, he has decided he can jump it quite easily thanks.

Hi Janice.
Wow! What a view from the church. I like your framing and the shadows and light here. Interesting photo.

Wow. This is amazing. Up until now the church with the nicest view in my experience is a little church backing onto a pine forest. The wall behind the altar features long, narrow, vertical windows--also a nice view, but very different from this one.

Thanks for your comments about the situation here. More people are planning to sleep at home tonight, which is a good sign. Those numbers just keep climbing, though.
