Mt Ruapehu shows signs of erupting - DOC

Breaking News
3:46PM Friday May 02, 2008

The Department of Conservation (DOC) is warning of increased signs of volcanic activity at Mt Ruapehu.

DOC issued a statement this afternoon advising climbers and other visitors considering visiting the summit area of Mt Ruapehu that there may be an increased chance of eruptions from Crater Lake.
"Risks to people entering the Summit Hazard Zone within about 2km of Crater Lake are assessed to be higher than normal. Gas concentrations near the lake have increased to levels that will affect some people."

Mount Ruapehu, or just Ruapehu, is an active stratovolcano at the southern end of the Taupo Volcanic Zone in New Zealand. It is 23 kilometres northeast of Ohakune and 40 kilometres southwest of the southern shore of Lake Taupo, within Tongariro National Park.

NZ's Most Active Volcano - Ruapehi is the North Island’s Highest Mountain

I took this photo last Sunday. I was down the Central Plateau at the wedding at Ohakune, 366kms south of home. Ohakune at the base of Mt Ruapehu, New Zealand’s largest ski area of 1800 hectares of wide-open slopes.

It all looked good to me, but there’d been no snow at the Turoa ski fields yet.

This is nearing the top of the Ohakune Mountain Road to the Turoa Ski Field.

The white clouds are CLOUDs - not an erupting volcano.

AND THANKS EVERYONE FOR CONGRATULATING ME ON MY 800th POSTING YESTERDAY - this is my 801st

Wow 801....no where near that....YET..:)

The clouds here in NZ are great! But that does look like an erupting volcano!

Hello Janice
Even with the bright sky the scenery has a moody and dark look and with that cloud it does look threathening. Being there at the right moment.
Good shot

Beautiful composition & Point of view. The road is so similar to one of our roads in North of Iran. I now understand how I miss my country.
Well done Janice.

Hi Janice,

It looks very angry to me. Is this for real, is it really about to blow it's top!

Great capture, sharp throughout and some very interesting clouds.

Nice one,

Janice
I like the white could contrast against the darker mountain. Andrei

Interesting Janice, last night I finished reading an article in the latest Readers Digest about two students who were trapped up there when it did erupt. Good colour and light and you can almost see the sulphur. TFS,
David

You sure have some great views and natural events to photograph over there.

Great landscape.
Tom

Hello Janice, an interesting view from New Zealand;we don't see many scenes from NZ of this area.
Actually the clouds give us an idea of what could be possible if the volcano was to erupt!
Tfs, regards Jean.

Hi Janice,
NZ is a great nation. We have relatives there. My wife will gonna take up IELTS exam on July. She is a registered nurse. I hope someday, we live in your gorgeous country. Excellent shot.
