Stone Wall of the Church

This is the Knox Presbyterian Church in Cheviot, in the South Island of NZ.

As we drove north to Kaikoura from Christchurch we had to stop at Cheviot when we saw this unusual church. Cheviot is a small rural town in the Hurunui District of north Canterbury, 115 km north-east of Christchurch and 79 km south of Kaikoura on State Highway 1. Its 2006 population was 390.

The original Cheviot Presbyterian Church, was built in 1896 and later converted into a Sunday School Hall around 1953. Unfortunately it was burnt down at around 3am on the 4th May1954, being a total loss with an insurance claim amounting to £500 pounds.

A new Parish centre arose from the ashes in 1966. The stones were all donated from a local farm, and it gives you an idea of what a lot of the fields are like down that area. These will all be from the massive earth movements in the area many thousands of years ago.

What I like about this photo is the brilliant glass windows, and how the sun is shining on the other side of the building and the sunlight is coming through the building and brightening the windows on this side.

I think these windows must be in the crèche area in the church – note the little toy teddy bear and other colourful playthings on the window ledge.

And the Hydrangea flowers growing below the window are an added attraction – well I think so – what do you think?

Lovely shot, these old churches in NZ are truely capturing!

I nearly added on of a church in Nelson, but because I shared the camera with Danni, decided it best not to use any photos as we could not be 100% who took what image.

Lovely contribution to the theme. I love the colours you have captured in the window. Great light and great contrasts with the grey stonework.

Cheviot? Bit close to home for me.....did you know that is the name of a range of extinct volcanos in Northumberland close to the Scottish border. My first taste of fell walking when 4 or 5 yrs was up the Cheviot! (I think it was still active back then :) ).

i quite curious on the reflection, is it a reflection of what is front of the window or inside? just love the colours of the windows plat, look like magic plat with vibrant colours. i like you those flowers as foreground too. tfs, Janice

I was going to ask " is the color of the window real or photoshoped" before i read the comment :) Because i like it too. But sorry, it reminds me of my nephew painting in it's color :):) I like you include some flower in FG too :D

Hello Janice,

This is like the walls we have in many seaside places where the stones come from the beach.

It must be an incredibly difficult job to build a wall which has no courses at all! The stones don't appear like wall building material!

Great details and I, like you, love the light coming through the stained glass window.

It is that you say it about the sun shining from the other side; I don't think the fresh viewer can notice that. I'll make a workshop...........just because I hate non-straight lines.....

A beautiful capture here, neat well balnced shot with good texture and lovely detail. I also spotted the teddy in the teddy in the window and smiled. I like the flower in the foreground too it adds a nice soft touch to the image
