“If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?"

This is a philosophical riddle that raises questions regarding observation and knowledge of reality.

I looked up many Google pages and here are some of the answers I liked:

• No, but the squirrel that it lands on will...

• Of course it makes a sound. If no one is there to hear it. . . That just means no one is there to hear it.

• Just because there is no witness it does not mean something didn’t happen. Does your heart beat when you’re not listening to it? Does the river flow when you not monitoring it, watching it? Yes, yes, yes.

• Do the birds have ears?

• Well yes it does, and the bigger the tree, the louder the sound.

• I say yes it does make a sound regardless of whether or not there is an eardrum for the sound to bounce off of.

• Obviously it makes a sound. But if nobody is around, nobody will hear it.

• The absense of a human being doth signify NOTHING...it's gonna make a sound whether a human is there to actually hear it or not. ♥

• If a tree falls in a forest and there is no one there to see it is it really there?

• If a tree falls in a forest and no one's there to hear it, do the other trees laugh?

• If a tree falls in a forest, will your investors hear it?

• If a tree falls in a forest, it may or may not make a sound. But this much is certain: If it falls in a forest managed by the federal government, it will generate significantly less revenue than if it falls in one managed by a state government.

• If a tree falls in a forest and lands on a politician, even if you can't hear the tree or the screams, I'll bet you'd at least hear the applause.

• If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does the coffee still taste bitter?

Can something exist without being perceived? - e.g. "Sound is only sound if a person hears it"

If a man speaks in the forest and there is no woman there to hear it, is he still wrong? - - -George Carlin

My answer: YES!!

Hi, Janice -
Lovely photo, very funny note! Great shot of this lush forest. The subject tree makes a perfect diagonal across the frame. The colors are warm and natural and everything is nice and sharp.

I had a science teacher once whose answer to this question was, "No sound exists." Why? "Three elements are necessary to have sound: (1) the thing which causes the soundwaves to be produced; (2) the medium through which the waves travel (e.g. air, water); and, (3) a receptor (the eardrum). If any one of those elements is missing, then there cannot be said to have been a sound. In space, there is no air, and therefore, you can have a vibration and a receptor, but without the medium to transmit it, there is no sound." A pretty dry approach to a fun philosophical question, but there you have it. Have a great weekend -
Sandy

Janice, LOL! LOL!
This tops 'em all!! You note is hysterical. I've thought about this ancient riddle and many others... (when a cow laughs, does milk come out of it's nose? ..."herd" that one in a commercial)

Great addition to the theme. Lisa

Excellent entry for the theme.
Good sharpness and details.

Its shout will be heard miles away!

Bonjour Janice,
Ce sont d'abord les couleurs qui m'ont attiré dans ta photo. Elles sont magnifiques. La luminosité est, elle aussi, superbe et toute l'atmosphère qui en résulte pareillement.
Bravo pour la photo mais pour la note aussi!

Michel.

Hi Janice,

Lovely shot, I remember this "Forest" wonderful captured, I still can't get over how little it is but how "Ancient" it look, excellent place, great captured and composition, did someone just yelled "Timber...."? good shot!

Have a nice day,

Cheers,
Sweety

Hi Janice,

This absolutely is a more mysteriuous forrest then the woods we have here - also different trees. Love the atmosphere in the woods and I can find that in your picture.
As for sound, when I see a huge tree fallen over, then my imagination is big enough to immediately hear the sound it made when falling - that what you get for storing so many years of memories and experiences........
Absolutely love your note.

TFS both

Els

Hi Janice,
This is great, whenever I try these 'bush' shots, I get OE sky.
The lighting was good to you, nice detail and colour saturation throughout, well done.
As to the answer...if nobody is there to here it, we'll never know. If you were there, and it landed on you...it wouldn't matter;)
Heaven forbid,
Pete.

Janice Hi:
I saw this beautiful presentation for the theme yesterday and wanted to wait for points before responding. Wonderful composition with great colors, clarity and POV. An excellent note, as well. I hope you have an excellent weekend.

Hi Janice
Having lived 29 days in the ice storm of 1998 I can definitely vouch for the crackling sound trees make and it is scary especially at night.
Your composition is good and sharp giving us a nice oblique line. Good job

Hi Janice,
Great photo, nice light, color and depth and clarity....good job.
The note is just great and a wonderful companion to the photo and the philosophical question.
By the way, I've always felt that the answer is "how would you even know it fell", so why worry. :o)
TFS, good work and great addition to the theme.
