RANGITOTO ISLAND

Rangitoto is a Maori name, "rangi" meaning sky, and "toto" meaning red, or blood.

This is the island of Rangitoto, Auckland’s youngest volcano. Known as Rangi by its friends.

Here you can see Rangi’s shape. Its distinctive peaks were known as the Nga Pona rotu a Peretu (the three knuckles of Perutu), and as Nga Tuaitara a Taikehu (the dorsal fins of Taikehu). Rangototo’s link with these illustrious ancestors and its long use as a burial place confirm its spiritual and symbolic importance to local iwi (Maori group).

Rangitoto literally means “blood red sky”; however, the name is traditionally linked with a fight between Tamatekapua and Hoturoa, the commanders of the Arawa and Tainui canoes. Tamatekapua was injured, hence the name Te Rangi i totongia a Tamatekapua – The day the blood of Tamatekapua was shed.

Rangototo’s eruption about 600 - 700 years ago, was witnessed by Maori inhabitants on Motutapu Island. Rangototo erupted in the sea in the entrance to the Waitemata Harbour and was formed during eruptions probably lasting one to several years.

This is the view from on top of Mt Victoria in Devonport on the North Shore of Auckland. These are some of the houses at Devonport and Cheltenham. The water is the Waitemata harbour, part of the Hauraki Gulf, in Auckland

Hello Janice,

Your composition stands out well!
The f/g is very interesting with the detailed view of the houses but of course, the main focal point is the volcano.
I do like how the whole scene is watched over by the protective cloud!

I saw this particular area on a documentary on T.V. You really have done it proud!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Janice,
Almost missed this posting. Great view excellent captured and presented. The composition is very well balanced creating an attractive panorama. Like the colourful houses on the foreground the blue sky with the fluffy clouds is a fine detail. A few months to go before I can see this with my own eyes!
Kia ora.
