Jesus Washes His Disciples' Feet

1 It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father.

3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God;

4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist.

5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet.

15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.

At Easter time some churches follow Jesus’ words literally and will go through a Washing of the Feet ceremony.

A couple of years ago our church did this and I took some photos. This is a mother washing her young daughter’s feet. What I find touching about this photo is the scratch on the little girl’s foot. I was going to clone it out – but decided I preferred to show it.

I also took a photo of the same mother kissing her feet too. They were thrilled when I gave her copies of them all.

For the Fingers and Toes Theme – thanks Helen. . .

Wonderful contribution !

thanks,

Well done Janice, the exposure is spot on, normally anything white that close gets blown out.
Not being very religious, I didn't know about that tradition. I can see why the parents were so happy with your image.
Cheers,
Pete.

Hello Janice,

A very sharp and detailed shot of caring hands and tired feet! You really have shown the white towel to perfection!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Janice,

That was my first thought when I saw your picture in the thumbnail - however I don't know a church in our country that has that ceromony.
Indeed that scratch just has to be there, glad you did not remove it.

Wonderful contribution Janice. I have only ever seen this once but it was the clergyman doing the washing. Good light and lovely skin tones.

Fingers & toes all around, Janice. Well spotted. A nice shallow DoF, and nice light from the flash. Do you use an external flash or the built-in one?

Janice,
My grandparents on my mother's side were both ordained ministers. I participated in foot washing services as a child in their church and it was a humbling yet precious event to take part in. It was done at their church on New Year's Eve in a service they called "Watch Night Service." I haven't heard of any churches doing it since I was young and my present church doesn't do it. Thanks for the picture and the memories!
God's best,
Tim
