On the way through the Karangahake Gorge - en route from Auckland to Tauranga - the remains of the Crown Mine Battery are unmissable.

A short walk from the roadside brings you amongst these old concrete ruins and rusting iron remnants.

Gold mining was a booming industry up until the late 1920s, and at this once-sprawling plant, closed in 1929, quartz and rock was pulverised - literally battered, hence battery - to extract the gold.

Now only the foundations remain, although keen walkers can follow the trail to a kilometre-long jaunt through an old railway tunnel.

---

I was unsure how to present this shot. I didn't want to place the concrete structure so centrally, but with structures in the foreground and a dramatic sky (enhanced by a darkened gradient in PP) I was reluctant to crop more than just a little.

Feedback on how this could look better ... if at all ...?

Hey Rew, something entirely different from you! Nice.
The sky - I like the enhancing that you did, very dramatic indeed. Looks like there's a little poof of smoke or something right in the middle of the sky - is that what that is?

The old structure is really interesting. I like the contrast between the rusting iron and the green of the surrounding area. The central placement of the main structure doesn't bother me at all - there's enough other interesting stuff around to keep your eye from just going to the main foundation!
Interesting note too:)
Trudy

Very Oldy Worldy look to it Rew, nice to see something new. It would look cool with your models posing in the Arches, good notes too :)

Quite a different post from you, but very interesting. Excellent detail!! I like the colors which help show the age. TFS

Hi Rew
I think the central look of the mine is good here, because the concrete block items in front aren't centrally placed.
The photo can be divided into thirds - the sky, the building and then the ruins in the foreground.
I like your PP work - and the stormy sky stands out strongly. What is the brown tinge in the sky going from left to right in the very middle? Smoke?
Bravo
Janice

PS I laughed at Steve's comments about putting your models in the archways - perfect!!! You'll have to drive them all down there.

'And now for something completely different'

I particualarly like the dramatic sky done with pp. Maybe I'd crop to a more panoramic view - with the building fitting the frame so to speak.
I'll have a go at a WS

Hi Rew,
At the first sight I believed that you present an archeological site with the ruins of a old temple.
In fact, it is an other kind of temple, the one of our decadent industrial society!
I think you did a good job with the composition. It is a classical presentation with the rocks of foundations in FG leading the glance towards the concrete structure in center. As you said with the dramatic sky, there are three plans so balanced. I like the cold and austere ambiance of the scene just enhanced by the rust in the top of the building.
Very well seen and done! Regards!
Annie

Hello,

Superbe image, le teinte sont splendides, tu as réussi a donné un très belle ambiance à l'image, avec ce beau ciel gris dégradé, superbe.

Bravo et amitié

Hi Rew Excellent shot, good P.P. work in so far as it is undetectable as being obvious P.P. work. A departure from your usual contributions, We were looking for one of your models ;~) Thanks for sharing.

Regards Phil.

ReW
Interesting composition question. Yes the building is central, but the blocks in the foreground which lead the eye in are off centre to the right.I like the colour especially this red brown which relieves an otherwise undramatic landscape in terms of colour. Great sky.
I could imagine this as a set in some post holocaust movie.
Greetings from Greece
Phil

Hi Rew,
I love this shot, the PP work is great with the darkened sky - the clours have an HDR look about them and its such an interesting structure.
I think positioning the subject in the centre works really well for a symmetrical building like this - its also good to see you getting out of the studio.
cheers
Jack

Interesting ruins.
like the dark sky.
I think your subject is plonked right in the middle, but this is the best crop for this shot, prob a different POV ( lower from an angle ) would improve this shot.
nice to see a change of photo once and a while.

Hi Rew
Nice to see a different shot from you. I like the centred shot here, it works well with the sky and the old ruins in the foreground. I also like what Steven suggusted :)

regards
Tracey

Not your usual stuff Rew , it changes from your studio shoots and it can`t be a bad thing to go out there and get your own impressions of the world , you are as good in this environment as any landscape shooters .Cool !
Taking into account the addition of the gradient enhancement on the sky i admit that you certainly did the right thing here as this sky is quite spectacular and this is what the comp needed imo yep some extra drama , even with f3.5 it is pretty sharp from front to back , no doubt a succesful presentation of these ruins and frankly i do not think of anything that would make it look any better , just fine as is , you just did the right move with the sky, nonetheless i am sure with a less threatening sky it would still have an appealing " ambiance " about it , in a more natural aspect. TFS,
My warm regards ,
Carol

Hi Rew, We walk the Gorge frequently and this rendition from you certainly represents a very dramatic viewpoint. I don't mind your central positioning of the subject and the darkened sky adds to the mood. Nice foreground interest too. Very Stonehenge!
Cheers, Pat.

Only just spotted this one Rew, First off love the colours here, and that sky is impressive.

Sometimes its a little tricky to know just how to present something, that really needs to be central.. but as stated, those foreground stones/blocks are not central so works ok here..they actually help make the photo, having them there for interest.

Interesting place, we have stopped here, but Ive never got close to this..I cant remember is this fenced off ?

Thanks for sharing.
Cheers
Dawn

This is a wonderful composition. Wonderful colours too and a good DOF. I like the dark sky, its a good contrast.
Best wishes,
Achim

This was good Rew,very detailed colors and texture show its age. I think it is a good venue to bring a model here.

Wow Rew, what a special peace of landscape and architecture. I like the colors and atmosphere.
How to make it better? .... maybe I would place the building more to the left (by walking to the right). The concrete at the right of the photo would have been more in sight then too.
But .... you are allowed to be proud on this composition. ;-)
Joop!

Hello Rew,
I can't tell you how to improve this picture, my opinion is that it's fine the way it is. It shows what it has to show, the battery, its surrounding, few other relics, so one can get an idea of the spot. I don't think that every photo should be artistic, there is such a thing as a simple document. And I think this one is a fine and interesting document. And of course you know how to manage the tecnical details.
Have a nice week,
Donato

Hello, Rew!
The image presented here looks really dramatic with those dark clouds dominating the entire setting and the textured/distressed stone of the ruins.
I'm afraid you're right, the crop really isn't fortunate here, a more effective way to have done it, would've been cropping the image more to the left, and leaving more space to the right, including all of the stone walls that show there. You would've been giving the image a better sense of perspective.
I noticed some orange spots in the sky, too, right in the center of the image, that either could've been cloned out, or instead of cloning them out you could've applied the same color as "aging stains", onto several areas of the image. I don't know if that was your intention of leaving them there, or they just got there by mistake or other...
Nevertheless, I like the gloomy atmosphere, and mood is one quality this posting doesn't lack!
Best regards,
Diana

Basically, a different genre, Rew. But, I am 'smelling' your next portrait session here with Bianca in black, or Kristy with her 'glamour' pose, or perhaps for something more 'evil' (that sounds quite matching with the characteristic of the abandoned mining) is with Misa. :) Ah... my imagination is a little wild here...

Composition: I think this is good enough from this POV, mate. To be honest, for me, I couldn't suggest any better since I do not know this place and couldn't imagine any other angle. What was presented here looks fine to me.

Ramdan.

i like dark moods Rew!

great and interesting compo..
beautiful idea..
I wouldnt change anything here its cool..

i was wondering about your centering it but I wouldn't have chapped any part out either so in a way it works. I am loving the sky. I think personally that you presented this well and the color just pops. I think you do well with your models, but landscapes and your 'different' shots work just as well and are very enjoyable to look at. TFS

This is such a dramartic shot Rew. I like it. I think this is better than the workshopped one. It gives a larger view. It also shows that this abandoned castle is in the middle of huge forest. Sothy

If you want to be a little different, then I think you can try lots of composition options to present it. This one will be like ordinary travel picture. but if you try to use those grasses as a frame (because the form of them are really nice), then you can play with composition, dof and many more :D

Hi Rew, great view of strange architecture, splendid Grey sky. very well done, ciao Silvio

Hello Rew! Very interesting crown mine battery. Very interesting scenery. Mysterious place and scenery. Good lightness. Original picture. Good luck!

As you mentionned for my picture, the image is all about light. I can reply the same for this one. I love the brillance of the main subject against the dark sky. This image is timeless by the subject itself, but herbs in the foreground seem to add even more to time as if this place have been abandoned for centuries.

Reminds me images of places as we can see in "Lord of the rigns" or any similar movies. Great shot and TFS.

Beautiful, even wenn this not the expression of beauty ist. Just like ancient ruins, and great sky to accentuete the waste and dramatic. Great composition, good work. Regards Csabi

An interesting landscape and a well presented picture - the placement of the building in the centre actually works well as the landscape helps to frame it, and the natural symmetry helps it to "fit in" - it just looks right. Colours are well saturated and details strong, and not overly sharpened.
Thanks for sharing

Hello Rew - Interesting dark and foreboding shot. The ruins against the threatening sky makes an interesting composition.
