[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is the Old Aged stage of the Kiokio, a native NZ fern,
BLECHNUM NOVAE-ZEALANDIAE formerly called BLENCHNUM CAPENSE
Maori name: Kiokio – Kee-oh-kee-oh
Other names: Gully Fern. Water Fern. Palm-leaf Fern.

This Blechnum - Kiokio is a very common New Zealand native fern, often seen on roadsides, stream edges, and in scrub and swamps, as well as alongside tracks in the bush. In fact, it is almost like a weed in some areas.

It is found most widely all over New Zealand. It never flowers, and spores are borne on dark brown fronds. The long cascading fronds can grow up to up to 2m long and 50cm wide and are a bright reddish colour when new, and turn light green and then darker green as they mature.

And now we see the next stage – when the fern fronds all change to brown, and wrinkle and twist until they all just deteriorate and breakdown, falling to the ground.

Hi Janice,
What a beautiful image!
I like this way for interpreting the old age theme!
What grabs me here, are the colors and patterns. You pass from the gray tones to the brownish ones with a great subtlety of nuances. The image is luminous with a a great acuity on the details and a good depth of field. Very artistically done! Annie

What a strange and wonderful shot, Janice.
the leaves look almost metallic. Like lovely beaten gold and silver fashioned into leaves. The light and contrast is perfect, marvelous detail and just a totally unusual shot. That is really pretty. Many thanks and warm regards,
Shelly

Hi Janice

Thanks for joining in the Friday theme fun & this is a good entry in the Old Age theme. Wonderful textural details with excellent sharpness & tonal range. I like the mionimalist colour, & repetition of patterns & shapes formed by the curling fern fronds. Tfs!

Bonjour Janice

Beau graphisme et belle harmonie de couleurs

Félicitations
Sylvain

Hi Janice,
Magnificent sharpness, details and DOF.
The texture and colors are wonderful making it seem like the leaves are made of silver and gold!

Hello Janice,

A fine image of overlapping textures and subtle colour tones. Your dof takes every advantage of the leaf layers.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)
