Harlequin Flower / Wand Flower
Sparaxis tricolor

This is a ‘grow anywhere’ and a 'brighten up your day' type of flower.

Isn't it colourful?

Every Spring this beauty appears in my garden. It grows well in NZ. And therefore that means it will grow okay in my garden. I also have some purple and yellow Harlequin Flowers that appear each year too.

It got its name from its extremely colourful flowers which are bi- or tri-coloured with a golden centre and a small ring of black surrounded by another colour.

Sparaxis tricolour is a bulb-forming perennial plant that grows in well-drained sunny soil. And what I like about it – once it stops flowering I ignore it until its greenery dies away and it appears again every spring. . . as I said – it's MY KINDA FLOWER!!

Hello Janice,

I'm amazed that this fine shot has received so little attention! The diagonal composition, the attractive colours and the effective use of narrow dof really make it stand out.
It has a kind of etherial quality which would make this an eye-catcher in any horticultural magazine!

Have a good day,
Bev :-)

Janice - delightful photo with its vibrant color.
Really like the DOF and BG on this as it adds to the shot.
Your choice of frame works well .
personally I can not see anything that you could do to improve on this.

Hi Janice,
Yes this is!
I see Harlequin gave his name at many things, here we have Harlequin ducks which almost similar Comedia del Arte colors of your splendid flowers!!
Very bright red and yellow against the soft blurred background!
Really a beautiful and alive picture! Annie

Janice
Jolie composition avec une gestion intéressante de la DOF et superbes couleurs de ces fleurs.
Amicalement

Hi Janice,
The reds against the lush green is perfectly captured and exposed. The shallow DOF (f/5.0) creates a fine focus on the beauty of the red flower with the bright yellow core.. The black frame enhances the image. Great one my dear!
Hans
