Another photo of New Zealands iconic Koru. My previous photo showed the koru head tightly furled and this one shows the koru unfurling. I have a wonderful stand of native bush behind my home and I’m lucky to be able to get these shots. This was taken hand held.

The Koru is the Māori name given to the new unfurling fern frond and symbolizes new life, growth, strength and peace. It is an integral symbol in Māori art, carving and tattoos. The circular shape of the Koru helps to convey the idea of perpeptual movement while the inner coil suggests a return to the point of origin.

Koru can also refer to bone carvings. Those generally take the shape of the uncurling fern plant. When bone is worn on the skin, it changes colour as oil is absorbed. The Māori took this to symbolise that the spirit of the person was inhabiting the pendant. When someone gives a pendant to someone else, it is the custom that they wear it for a time so that part of their spirit is given as well.

The koru is used in a stylised form as the logo of Air New Zealand and as an iconic symbol of New Zealand flora. Friedensreich Hundertwasser based his Koru Flag for New Zealand on the symbol, and it also formed the basis for a notable series of artworks by Gordon Walters. The koru is also the current symbol for peace in Japan.

Very little PP work just a slight tweak to details and colour using the Topaz Detail filter in Photoshop.

hi ralph
great close up shot, strange looking plant good strong colour like the blurred b/g.
regards
jimmy

Nice capture, strong colours and nice detail, and I really like the fern leaves and glimpse of sky in the background, and the diagonal flow through the frame.

Hello Ralph,

I do like this!
The curl of the fern-like plant is beautiful in its shape, it colour and its sharp details.
I love the composition where it emerges from the r/h/c and travels on a diagonal across the frame. Personally, I would have cropped the top a little so that the plant terminatated at the t/l/h corner.
Good dof to create a fine bokeh.

Have a good w/e,
Bev :-)
