No prizes for guessing who won - this is my first real attempt at High Speed Photography.

The first thing I learned was that HSP uses long exposure times - this is a 5 sec exposure in a darkened room using a sound activated flash trigger.

The sound of the impact is picked up by the microphone and the controller sends as s signal to the flash which in this case was a modified disposable camera - the flash speed was 1/7000th sec.

Even although I consider myself a reasonable golfer, the thought of swinging a golf club in the dark and smashing my camera was quite scary so I had a small LED light shining on the bulb so I could see my target. This also had the effect creating an image of the bulb before impact.

The flash trigger kit is made by Quaketronics and cost about NZ$180 - I will post a shot of the set-up in the WS.

I think I can feel a new addiction coming on! and my wife wants to know why the lights in the spare room aren't working

WOW Jack Fantastic

I saw your question in the forums and wondered where you were going with this.

I don't feel competent to comment but it looks great for a first attempt.

Now what about a Raw Egg, a mushy tomato, maybe a baloon filled with coloured water, that's enough to get you started.

Look forward to more of these.

Ralph

You should be thrilled with this result!!!! I'm interested in seeing the set-up.

Well done for a first go - I've been thinking about getting remote triggers for this kind of thing - but you've actually gone and done it!!!!!

The actual image quality is not wonderful if you'll pardon my brutal honesty - I'm surprised that the 1/7000th flash didn't freeze the glass shards and golf head. To me this looks a little like a slow synch flash mode (which I suppose it is as the shutter was left open for 5 seconds). But of course this is where practice comes in..

Anyway Jack - good show for having a go at something different. I really can't wait to see more..

Cheers
DAvid

Hi Jack,
As soon as I saw the title I knew this was going to be an awesome shot. Very good idea, full points for thinking outside the square. Interesting effect from the 5-second exposure, appears to leave a faint 'ghost' of the light bulb behind. Bet it left quite a mess for you to clean up, the result appears well worth it though. The final part of your note is pure gold - Well done.

TFS,
Scott.

Wonderful photo Jack. That fast flash speed has frozen everything solid. The club head may be a bit forward of your hands on impact then again, maybe not. I would love to see the same photo with a golf ball,

Doug

Hi Jack,
This is a very inovative picture for TL! I'm quite happy to see the magnificent result of such a stunning photographic experiment. Your explanation was very interesting to read too. Will add this picture to my favorites. No remarks regarding the technique, this it's spot on!
Hans

This is great Jack. Trust an engineeer to work it all out - but it still sounds like double-dutch to me!!! (Am I being racist? Hans might think I am...)
Good shot and well timed. I hope the golf club wasn't too scratched and that you've still got the lights on at home...
Janice

Good to find someone else who has a smashing time taking shots (pardon the puns) I hope that doesnt happen regularly when you hit your goldf balls ;-)
Looks an interesting subject for photography but I know zilch about the technique and so I will just say TFS
warm regards
David

Great experiment
I love the shattering of the bulb and all the debri going everywhere. Be good to try with an egg I reckon to see what the liquid would look like.
Cheers
Jim
