Irishman Creek

This is a roadside shelter that I saw in the Mackenzie Country, when my husband and I were travelling in the South Island of New Zealand last April.

This shelter is at the gate to the high country sheep station Irishman Creek, only a short distance from Lake Tekapo.

In the early 1950's this sheep station played a major role in the way boats propelled themselves through water, for the modern jet boat was developed at Irishman Creek Station.

Rural mail is delivered and collected from this roadside shelter using I believe a bag hanging on the side of the shelter.

We saw this as we were driving to Lake Pukaki on the way to Mt Cook. And we stopped in the afternoon on the way back to Lake Tekapo where we were staying for a couple of nights.

The blue haze on the distant hills covered the whole of the area that day. Even when we visited Mt Cook, the hills showed this soft blue haze. It was like the blue sky reflecting on them.

I saw this photo on PBase - taken at the same place but in a different season and in B&W. And NOT by me!! I wish it was...

Hi Janice,
I pass this shelter in numerous occasions ... but never thought of stopping and capturing the scene. The mountains are covered by snow now ... I'll take a photo next time. Well seen and composed! tfs
Cheers,
Renier

I really like the landscape effect of this, Janice
I think I'd have preferred the hut on the other side though, so that the crossbars become a lead-in line from the corner and so that there's more space in front of the hut

Hello Janice

What a dleightful capturem simple but very well composed and almost a desolate feeling to this little building. Very interesting notes and lovely framing suit the shot well

TFS regards Helen

Hi Janice
Great capture ... reading the comments I think I agree with Silke. I spent an interesting evening on the phone with a my friend one evening when she was putting together a collage of photos and was emailing her ideas.
It is amazing how shifting the main POV can change a picture ... or has it got something to do with being left or right handed!!!
If I had not read Silke's comment I would not have looked and thought about it too much.
Cheers

Hi Janice - I'm gonna disagree with Silke on this one, I think the hut is fine on that side...

I think the angle of the shot and hut make it a more natural fit on that side...I thank that the angle is the important aspect - for me, anyway :-)

I think we do get a sense of space from this image, it's a good one :-)

hi Janice, really nice composition and choice of panoramic format which gives the impression of remoteness of the shelter.

I found amusing the reading of your note. I liked really the appropriate format , excellent quality as usual. An original subject.

Iso.

What I like about this the most Janice is the crop. Lovely colour and detail and a beautiful light on the mountains. Very similar to the view I would get driving through the Tasmanian Midlands on the way to Hobart.
