Chalk and Cheese

“Do you know the origin of the expression chalk and cheese?"

This answer comes from:
http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-cha4.htm

"As different as chalk and cheese" is an old proverbial phrase to suggest that two things, superficially alike, are totally different in their qualities.

The earliest citation of the phrase, in John Gower's Confessio Amantis, 1390 does suggest some dodgy dealing, in which cheese is replaced with chalk:
"Lo, how they feignen chalk for chese."

When I look at these two people here I kept thinking of the phrase: Chalk and Cheese

Totally different ages, hair, clothes, and especially their expressions.

It was taken in a crowd of people watching the street buskers acting up for us.

You are very observant! I have never heard that phrase before, only 'as different as night and day'. The picture definitely shows the title well though. A very good capture. TFS and have a great day!

Hi Janice
Very well seen. Very good portrait of the young girl. Very good contrast in the expressions. Well done.
Mike

Hi Janice

I love this shot, a simple compo but as you rightly point out so many amazing contrasts, Superb DOF and the contrast between the sharpness of the young girl at the front and the softer view of the older lady is excellent

TFS kind regards Helen

Indeed, Janice, this is a funny combination of two completely different expressions. Well seen and well done!
The good depth of field adds to the "opposition" shown by your picture.
TFS & kind regards,
Erik

Hello Janice.
Very well taken. I like the different expressions.
What one person like is not always to the taste of another.

Crowds are fun to shoot into because you often get chalk and cheese situations. Great composition

Janice,
I think this is a perfect of example of a shallow DOF. The colors are vibrant and the focus is perfectly sharp. I have never heard of the Chalk and Cheese expression! The portrait mode was also a good choice here. Nothing to offer for improvement. Fine work here.
Scott

The older woman seems to be there under protest Janice whereas the young lass is thorughly enjoying herself. Good colour and skin tones and fine detail. Maybe an upwards crop to remove the partial knee and hand?

I don't know if it's a good illustration of the proverb, Janice, but I like the contrast in their expression anyway. You used a terrifically shallow DoF here, the person in the back is blurred yet it's quite easy to make out her expression... your subject is quite radiant as well... though she's clearly a supporter for the Netherland's soccer team - so I hope she doesn't have a depression now ☺^☺.
