When I saw this as a thumb nail, I felt this could easily be a poster for theater performance. Its either their pose or their expression or maybe I've been too long working with actors, but your note explained it all.
I like the dreamy look she holds and him looking straight into the camera with malice!
Its true having good actors you can go a long way.
The only thing that I'm not sure if it bothers me or not is his arm cut off.
