Alberto Santos Dumont (Palmira, July 20, 1873 - Guaruja, July 23, 1932) was an airman, Brazilian inventor and engineer, considered one of the pioneers of aviation. Heir of a wealthy family of coffee in the city of Ribeirao Preto, interior of Sao Paulo, could commit to the study of science and mechanics living in Paris. Unlike other airmen of the time, left his research into the public domain and without registering patents.
Santos Dumont designed, built and flew the first dirigible balloons guided. In doing so he became the first person to demonstrate that controlled flight was possible. This achievement earned him the Deutsch Prize on October 19, 1901, while on a flight circled the Eiffel Tower with his airship No. 6, becoming one of the most famous in the world during the twentieth century.
In addition to his pioneering work in airships, Santos Dumont was the first to lift off aboard a plane, driven by a motor and the first aircraft to achieve a predetermined circuit in official testimony of experts, journalists and popular. On October 23, 1906, he flew about 60 meters at a height of two to three meters with his 14 bis or Oiseau de proie '(French for "bird of prey"), at Campo de Bagatelle in Paris. Less than a month later, on November 12, repeated the feat and, before a crowd of witnesses, ran 220 meters at a height of 6 meters. The flight of the 14-Bis was first verified by the Aero Club of France of a heavier than air flight in Europe, and possibly the first public demonstration of a car taking off on their own, without the need for a ramp to launch.
Although some countries in the world consider the Wright brothers as the inventors of the airplane take-off occurred on 17 December 1903, using a catapult and the imposition of the United States, the 14-Bis had an auto-off propelled, and therefore, Santos Dumont is considered in their country of origin, Brazil and some countries such as France, as the "Father of Aviation"
