Em 1660, o governador do Rio de Janeiro, Salvador Correia de Sá, mandou alargar a trilha do Facão, então uma estreita picada na mata, transformando o antigo caminho guiaianá numa via de riquezas para a vila Nesse mesmo ano, o povoado se separou por conta própria da freguesia de Angra dos Reis e se auto-nomeou Vila de N.S.dos Remédios de Paraty (9).

Em 1667, a Coroa portuguesa reconheceu essa nomeação como fato consumado e o assentimento a isso se deu em razão do desenvolvimento econômico do povoado e do comércio pela trilha do Facão. Em 1668, a vila iniciou as obras de uma segunda Matriz, em pedra e cal, substituindo a de pau-a-pique.
