Train smoke

This is a picture taken in Paranapiacaba, São Paulo, Brazil.
Paranapiacaba is a very small city built in the 19th century by English workmen. They came to Brazil to build the railroad going from the state´s capital to the harbour of Santos which was (and still is) an important outlet for coffee and other Brazilian exports.
First meant as a village to host the workers during their stay, it was later abandoned by most of its inhabitants when construction of the railroad finished. Most of the wooden houses are now empty and time and weather have taken their toll on them.
The train still passes there, but mostly cargo compositions. The passenger trains are few these days, and only operate for touristic purposes.
Paranapiacaba has become a "must-go" to photographers from São Paulo and few have not tried some shots there.
The place is famous for its fog, which comes without warning and in no time covers everything in such a way you will no longer see the person standing right next to you!
I had been observing this train´s smoke when I realized the fog was coming fast. You can see it coming on the upper part of the picture. I liked the way it provided a light background for the darker parts of the smoke clumn.
Shot with Tri-x B&W film, printed on paper, scanned and then turned to RGB on photoshop in order to shift it´s colour a little towards bluish green. I figured cooler tones would be more apropriate than the original b&w paper tones. |
