Hi Everyone,
Today i want to share with you a photo that i took on my trip to the very enigmatic island of Rapa Nui ( Easter Island ), Chile in Nov 2001 .
Here is a brief description of this site : 'Moai' are monolithic human figures carved from rock on the island mostly between 1250 and 1500 AD. Nearly half are still uncompleted at Rano Ranaku a nearby 'Moai' quarry but hundreds were completed and transported from there and set on 'Ahu'( platforms ) which were mostly at the island perimeter. As you may have noticed here almost all have overly large heads compared to the rest of their body , the 'Moai' are the 'Living Faces' and representations of chiefly, deified ancestors. Sitting on their 'Ahu' with their backs to the sea these statues were still gazing across their clan lands when the first Europeans first visited the island but most were cast down during conflict between clans on the island.
This group of Moai is named 'Ahu Tongariki' and is located 20 kms from Hanga Roa the only village on the island .There are 15 Moai in this group ,a tsunami flattened them in 1960 but they were put back up by a Japanese company between 1992 and 1995.
This is a scanned original B&W print from my pre- digital photography so it may not be of the best quality but in PP i adjusted contrast and gamma ,sharpened and added frame and text .

Hi carol, this is excellent. Good B/W, sharp with a good balance of contrast over brightness,a fine composition, good POV... goes to prove, the camera ain't important, the photographer is!!! TFS

Excelent photo, great POV , the effect of B&W is great also.

Carol, this is gorgeous. I love the Easter Island monolithics. There some natural shamanism about them. (secretly I hoped they would become one of the new world wonders. Unfortunately they didn't make it.) Very good job on the scanning and post processing. And a nice note too!! Thanks

Joris

Thanks very much for sharing with us this stunning image.
Monolithes are mysterious and charming and the POV is good, with the stones and the sky.
Ciao, Antonella

Hi Carol
I remember seeing a documentary about these large sculptures with their backs to the sea.
You did an awesome job of scanning as they are nice and sharp.
Also a great job of photographing.

J'apprécie l'excellente qualité de ce n&b en plus de la prise de vue dynamique, un sujet original ici, différent, j'aime.

The image looks just fine to me... The b&w conversion is wonderful, it has the right sharpness and the sculptures are amazing! Very good work!
Best regards,
Diana

Bonjour Carol,
Incroyable ! Le N&B est un bon choix et procure une atmosphère chargée d'émotion. Mes compliments.
Amicalement.

Pascalie.

Great POV and super b&w work which adds to the feeling of age about the subjects.
Thanks for sharing
