| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Maria came to the clinic where I was shooting in the small village of La Joya, Peru. She wanted to bee seen by "American" doctors but was strong as an Ox...
She invited me to her home so that I could show the world how the really poor Peruvians lived.
She raises guinea pigs, rabbits, turkeys and chickens to sell at market on a plot of land no bigger that most living rooms in a modern home. She's pictured here with her flock(?) of guinea pigs. Maria is an incredible woman. I hope I'm as strong as she is when I'm 70.
A few days later one of my Peruvian friends took me out to dinner to eat guinea pigs (a local specialty). Ordinarily I wouldn't eat a guinea pig but my friend was offering a gift of culture, not food, and those gifts can't be refused. |
