| About 65 km from Cusco in the Sacred Valley of the Incas lies the village of Maras. The mountain outside town has been a source of salt since Inca times. It's still used, and donkeys still transport the salt up the mountain. Here you see some of the hundred evaporation vats in various stages of drying (which accounts for the color variation). |
