stone masonry extraordinaire

| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Machu Picchu, an Inca city at its highlight about 600 years ago, was a "lost" city until rediscovered in 1911.
It has recently been selected one of the new seven wonders of the world. And it is wonderful!
Besides the fantastic situation at 2400 m surrounded by mountain peaks and high above the river Urubamba, the thing that impressed me most about this place was the genius of the Inca stone carvers. A lot has been reconstructed here...the original stones, however, (for example, those forming the wall in the background) are cut to a precision that is absolutely stupefying. One cannot slip a credit card between adjacent blocks, so precisley measured they are. And the Incas never used mortar. They also cut the stones (every 5th or 6th) with a slight interlocking protrusion which was earthquake resistant. The Incas, however, never discovered the rounded arch nor the wheel. But their
knowledge of engineering, astronomy, and agriculture
was exceptional. While Europe was deep into the Dark Ages, the Incas were shining! A lesson to all...every civilization comes and goes. May ours leave as an illustrious a heritage to those that follow as that which the Incas left. |

Hey Michael
THis has to be one of the places I visit before I'm too old. It certainly is awesome and your photo does it justice.
Great detail and POV, the masonry is of such a high standard, all the more amazing considering the wilderness and extreme geographical challenges all around.
Awesome note you have prepared too. TFS. Excellent!
regards,
Martyn
