| Between 1550 until 1850, the island of Gorée, just off the coast of Dakar, was one of the main ports of departure of slaves to be sold in the New World. How many? Millions...nobody knows for sure! The conditions of confinement and treatment were deplorable beyond description. Sixty-five to 80% of those captured and incarcerated died before they arrived at their destination...the Antilles, Brazil, or the southern USA. Husbands and wives were indiscriminately separated from each other and their children. Men, women, and children were "housed" in separate quarters for up to 3 months before their departure. Men were placed in irons (weighing 5 kg or more to discourage them from attempting to escape by the sea). Thousands drowned or were eaten by the sharks in the attempt anyway. A visit to the last of Goreé's many "slave houses" ("maison des esclaves"), which was completely restored in 1990 by UNESCO and the Fondation France Liberté, is an unforgetable experience, like that of seeing Dachau or Auschwitz. One walks away from Gorée in quasi silence and head bent down. |
