My son and his buddies were skateboarding near a street renovation project when I noticed a large amount of dirt and rubble piled up in the middle of the street. The sky that day was a bit cloudy and overcast. I wanted to create a dramatic shot that would darken the background sky and also eliminate the distracting houses, construction equipment and landscaping surrounding this pile of dirt. I asked the boys to stand in line on top of the rubble and picked a camera position about 30 yards away. I mounted a 250mm lens on my medium format camera and positioned it about a foot off the ground on a tripod. I then set up a 1400 watt strobe in a chimera soft-box {bast*** amber gel over flash tube) and positioned it off to the right and about 10 yards in front of my camera position. I took meter readings of the ambient light in the background and foreground and adjusted my shutter speed to be 2 stops faster than my meter’s recommendation. The fill flash was then adjusted to allow for the exposure I wanted on the boys while leaving the background “under-exposed” to achieve a more dramatic effect.

Un beau portrait de groupe! Leur attitude est géniale, calmes, décidés, et prèt à affronter le défi! Une bonne maitraise de la luminosité! Bravo!

Very photo good Jim! The attitude of these teens is very right... and universal. I recognize these faces well to have worked all my life with teenagers. Sure, in spite of their absence of smiling, they were to be very proud to pose for you. The point of view and the colors are excellent. There is a beautiful unit between the indigo blue of the sky and the denin their jeans. Well done! Annie

love the comp and angle, great attitudes an expressions, typical, thanx, M, (*_*)

This is a very beautiful portrait,Jim! I love the colors and the composition! Great "serious" expression captured here ! Excellent pp work done with the underexposed bg! Tfs! Michel

They look like a rock band minus the smiling faces! Nice portrait of the guys! Nice positioning and depth of field. Excellent notes!

Excellent - and a top notch note, well done

Fantastic lighting Jim. Your technical abilities are enviable. I do a lot of work with teens and I think you caught a bit of the mood of the generation here. Nice work.

Joe

Oh I love this, Jim! They are all at the age where they want to 'look cool' - lovely expressions from the MTV-generation. How did you manage to get them to stay so long while you hauled all your equipment ?

Great shot ! I am sure they secretly liked it very much !

Marleen

Kids with attitued. Love it.

Its clearly obvious here: the light is used in good control. Sure the boys are happy from that result. They all look so cool! Great work!
