First, the state is not Derry. This is in the town of Londonderry -- as it's officially known -- in the Londonderry County of Northern Ireland. This is Bloody Sunday's hometown and not Dublin or Belfast or London as many people who I've come across seem to think. Protestant vs. Catholic tensions are pretty fierce here.
I remember feeling a sense of humility as I stood there learning more about the world and events that have transpired over the course of time. I also remember getting the feeling of intimidation. And, I'm not so sure that I've really captured it here.
I think I've got an interesting enough subject, but ultimately got the POV wrong with the black & yellow post in front of the mural. Looking back, maybe I should have walked up closer and to the left of the monument and angled the shot across the face of the monument and maintain the mural in the background? What else have I gotten wrong? As is typical of my shooting until I improve, the camera setting were set to the Coolpix 885 "Landscape" setting. |

Once Ireland was and indipendent peaceful state !!!!!!!!!!!
One day english went to Ireland to make a conquest of land !!!
THIS IS THE HISTORY. NEVER FORGET THE FACTS !!!
When I call that city I say DERRY and irish call that city DERRY !!!
When you uploaded this image in treklens you selected Northern Ireland and then DERRY! When you buy postacard in that city, you read DERRY on the postcard!!!
If you don't believe me, well, go in that city and ask anyone, right in the place where you made the photo, "sorry man, are we in Londonderry?" and see what happen soon after ? You will have the final confirmation.
There's something chilling about this image - the black on white has a cold, threatening feel to it. It's a shame that there are so many poles in front of the mural as you note yourself. But what may have made an interesting image would have been just that mural with the 'no entry' sign in front of it - something symbolic there..
There appear to be two plaques to the left of the white building - and idea what they said?
The dreary weather adds to the tone of this photo, I think. This type of image will be, at some point in the future, of historical signifigance - a good capture.
Hi Daniel,
I regard it as a "fact of life" that street "furniture" and other clutter can sometimes create difficulty for the photographer. In this case I think that the mentioned post and the foreground tree, don't spoil the impact of your very interesting and atmospheric photograph. The painted Gable Ends say it all, and the gloomy weather, the smoking chimney, the "No Entry" sign and the general clutter provide a wailing chorus!

hello Daniel,
These murals give me the heebie jeebies. They are a constant reminder of a terrible period in N.I. history. They are intimidating and your image conveys this very well. Strong emotions are still stirred as the response to your picture demonstrates.
