Hi Marija! Long time no see! How hv u been? :)

I've been busy...just like u I suppose...
Anyways, it is a real portrait to me. Artistic? no, but the smile is very genuine and it really brightens up the whole photo.

The flash helps here for the eyes especially...it's always nice to have sparkles in the eyes.

She look photogenic in this photo...should ask her to let u take more photos in the future! ;)

I don't think the use of the flash detracts from the shot, in fact I think it enhances it as it brightens her face alot, which is a good thing as she is a very attractive lady. Nice smile and expression. Your brother's a lucky guy.

Hi Marija,
like the photo, a beautiful young woman. She ought to pose more often for you. Black and white is so good for portraits. The grain was also a good idea, makes it look like the old HP4 film but softer suiting her complextion.
The direct flash has cast a shadow on the background was that intentional or just a little close?

Hello Marija...Oh what a BEAUTIFUL girl is Tatiana..wowee you could do some lovely photographic work with her, if she would only let you...

Im not technical enough to advise how you should have gone about taking the light off her face.. but I do feel the grain is not right either, it hasnt spoilt it.. but Im sure she would look even more stunning with out the grain....keep on practising .. looks like you did a great job with the makeup too...nice to have girl times like that isnt it..

Hi Marija,
I read the note and I am surprised. I like the tight crop (or the original framing if you didn't crop the photo - whatever...), b&w choice, but I was sure you applied two excluding each other filter - a softening filter and grain adding filter. I don't find the light flattened here - small disturbance comes only from a bit too hard reflection on her mouth and narrow stripe of shadow on the right. But the flash light gave in return fantastic reflections in her eyes.
Since the skin with quite delicate tonal gradients look very softly, the added grain stays for me in conflict with it - I'd even say that it's a bit annoying with such a subtle portrait. Well, this is my opinion - not too praising, but... I am trying to be honest - otherwise it does not make any sense... :-) tfs

You did so well on my GIRL WITH EAR-RINGS but didn't do the same here and I wonder why.
Having said that, this is a different photograph and we must view it in that light.
As I see it, the girl is a beauty and any old snapshot would do the trick, as she is strong enough to carry any deficiencies, real or otherwise.
Composition-wise, I see her eyeline as being too high in the frame. If they were on that upper thirds line, the finished product would be that much stronger.
Agreed, shy or not, she is a true friend now and, as you have 'bonded', she should be able to trust you with a proper sitting. You know very well how to produce the end result, with natural light and maybe supplemented by reflectors ... so go for it and as soon as possible, d'you hear?!! Colour is not a crime, by the way. Portrait format presentation is also not an offense. I will post another of MJ soon. By all means work your magic on that one as you did for Girl with Ear-rings?
I am treating this one as a 'teaser' for the forthcoming main attraction.

I think you succeeded to make a quite well portrait. I've a little tip for you to make better flash photos. Use a A4 copy paper make there a hole in it for the lens you get the same effect as an soft box or use a make-up mirror and do it for the lens on an angle of 45 degrees. You'll be surprised about the effect, because an inbuilt flashlight is often to strong and to direct.
Ask her for more portraits she have the looks for a pretty model.

Hello Marija,
the portrait is nice but the model is stunning beautiful so you are encouraged to persuade her to pose for you !
With such a model you can play with so many kind of subjects/sessions/composition .
It would have been probably better to take more of the head of Tatiana ... but I had the same problem with my portraits...
I will post a couple of WS just to play.

Well, you just need to make one nice portrait of her and you'll see she will be ready for posing the next time. Trust ME ;)
Unfortunately, this one is not that nice, but is OK for start (although we've seen you started eons ago!). It's not even the flash that made her face look too flat (that's something usual when using built-in flash), but the skin texture which is totally ruined! Don't know whether you enlarged this shot or just took it with poor JPEG quality, but I've tried myself to enhance it and simply couldn't do anything but just another "add some random effect to make it look worse and say it's cool", and you know I don't like it.
You also might crop the bottom a bit more, to place her eyes on the upper third of the photo and her lovely smile on the lower third. That can make this kind of crop more powerful.
Good luck with your fresh model, hope this is a beginning of a wonderful practice :)

I love her "sparkle!" You did a wonderful job making sure that her eyes gleam and her smile glistens! I'm not wild about the grain, but it doesn't bother me particularly. It's just a different kind of portrait - more natural than what we're accustomed to seeing on TL! She's so pretty that it would be hard to mess her up, even if you tried!

Great shot. I am not sure I understand the definition of "real portrait". I think it turned out very nice. The only thing I could even suggest would be to take it closer to her so that you don't get the digital grain. She is very beautiful and will make a great addition to your family. :)
