this was taken on one of summer's premieres for this year, extremely hot, extremely sunny, i was sweating buckets and tried to lean out of the train to cool off in the breeze...

little did i know what i'd find once i looked down to see if i had a sure foothold

the love of the old man for his (probable) grandchild is expressed beautifully in his hands. hands are one of the most expressive parts of our exterior body... many great painters spent years trying to instil in their paintings hands that could express emotion, like Johannes Vermeer

you'll find an interesting essay on his studies on hands here: http://essentialvermeer.20m.com/interpretation/vermeer's_hand's_part_one.htm

Hi Sheryl
What a great capture. A sweet couple nicely captured with a good point of view. I like the blurred part on the left-hand caused by the movement.
Thanks for sharing

Sheryl ..everybody who has children / grand children must have been touched with your excellent photo. Looking to this photo it will not mather if we live in Japan..Australia .. Europe or Alaska, all children are the same in there innocent sleep. You are my champ of the day with this well captured photo. Big compliment from Holland..John T

Hi Sheryl,

Superb, what a great composition. I like the contrast between the strong movement outside, and the peace inside. Excellent work, plenty of feeling. I like a lot,

ferran

i like your photographs and the way you are able to capture life in poverty in places most people like to forget exist.

people have to know that their's extreme poverty even in the richest countries, and yet I don't really promote that the West should be the only ones attempting to help everyone, since it really goes along the same values that the Imperialist colonists went about. Going to foreign lands, because it was their purpose on Earth, to civilize, colonize and so on...

It's hard to argue against helping out, but at the same time, I think it really all has to come from within, slowly but surely we can all improve the world, or atleast our own house first before we go around telling people how to live their lives.

great shot once more sheryl!
The capture of stillness in a moving vehicle is brilliant!

Hi Sheryl - A beautiful moment of peace and quiet in an otherwise noisy and probably dirty environment. Well seen. Thank you for sharing.

That the man sits near the door is in itself a reflection on the travel conditions in India. The blurred movement outside the door captures the sense of speed. That the child sleeps in such a situation suggests she is not well. The old man's hand on her head could be suggestive of his silent concern for her.
There is a whole story here, Sheryl.
Great picture! Thanks for sharing.

Hi Sheryl,
Very good moment. "hazard" and "sanctuary", "open gate" and " safe hands", " speed" and "stable"...
Good contrast from inside of subject.

WONDERFUL! I love this image, the lighting, the emotion, the colors, the movement of the train captured on the left of the frame. Very nicely compoosed. What a capture!!
