Following my previous three photos of the big fire in Australia’s capital Canberra in early 2003, here is an impression of the fire front itself, to the left: Nothing to see but smoke. The shot was taken around 6pm with the fires having raged for some four hours by then. Slowly and reluctantly the people battling to save their homes and belongings in the middle of that inferno were leaving – or forced out by the police - to save their bare lives.

I personally know several who lost everything. Just everything. One of them and her husband had to finally give up their battle to salvage their home of decades. All that remained for them was to stop fighting and watch it burn to the ground. The car in the driveway, packed with photo albums, went up in smoke, too. They managed to race out on foot to save their bare lives. Another friend was having her Saturday afternoon nap when the flames – and luckily her husband, too - arrived at the house. He got her out at the very last moment.

These are just two of hundreds of personal dramas that happened in the inferno in Canberra’s west on that day. The fires continued until late at night.

Again little enhancement for documentary reasons: cropped slightly and framed

Hi Cordelia,
A dramatic image well depicting this dramatic event!
The dark smoke as seen against the sky enhances the atmosphere, and the single spectator likewise... By the way, there are good lines in your composition...
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Cordelia,
This one is also very interesting. The dramatic scene is well captured. The overall darkness combined with some light and smoke give it an eery feeling.
TFS,
Niek

Beautiful and dramatic photo in one
The tree gives his own framing

Hi Cordelia, Another great shot in your series- just amazing the amount of smoke- great angle for the picture to contrast the darkened sky from the smoke with the clear sunny sky off to the right- amazing the immensity of the fire and smoke. great note as well. superb documentary work my friend! Keep it up!

Best wishes,
Steve

Another excellent piece of photography Cordelia. Just enough colours, Good silhouettes and POV. TFS,
David
PS Many thanks for your comment on Longford Views
I was wandering around Punchbowl Reserve the other day and I am still in awe of seeing colours like one would in the ACT combining with the gums.

Hi Cordelia,
I like this photo with the great dramatic mood, with the tree framing the scene. Very well done.
Luc

Very nice Cordelia
I love the way the photo just naturally frames itself, it’s truly beautiful.
Thanks for sharing this beauty

Good photo, I think a littie more lighter would have worked better but the mood here is good.TFS

Hi Cordelia
Nice shot of the fire. Note is informative.

I have seen california fires approach y home, but been lucky. I hae had a lot stolen from my house while I was in Nepal once. I am hurt forever by it. Too lose every single thing, would be a burden on mylife. We all have treasures, that bind our heart and soul together in a world gone mad. We have pets, plans, books, treasures of other generations, so many different collections, projects, gifts... My heart goes out to these people.

Hi Cordelia, this sunset is superb and framed by this tree it's even better.

Nice soft shades. Very well done. Take care, Yan :)
