Pont Stierchen, Luxembourg

During a weekend trip to Trier, my wife and I decided to travel into Luxembourg, if for no other reason than to say that we had been there. I was very pleasantly surprised by what we found there, and I fully intend on returning and spending more time there.
I knew next to nothing about the city or country of Luxembourg, so I had no idea that the old city contains remnants of what were once massive fortifications overlooking the Alzette River valley. When you see how much is left of the walls and ramparts, it's amazing to think that this is only 10% of what was once there. Luxembourg was once known as the Gibraltar of the North, an imposing fortified city perched on a large rock.
The Pont Stierchen is part of the lower series of fortifications and crosses between the main part of the city and the smaller part of town that nestles beside the Alzette, known as the Grund (literally, the ground). The dual arches used to contain iron gates that blocked passage to everything except water. |
