[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
When I first visited Mexico in 1998, I was a laborer on a mission trip, helping build churches in Monterrey. I had never been outside the US (or the Atlantic seaboard, for that matter) and was mystified by the very different landscape from what I experienced growing up in Atlanta. I took a point-and-shoot APS camera and got some pretty good snapshots, but I was frustrated by the tiny images I got from the fixed wide-angle lens. At the same time, I watched a friend of mine (the trip photographer) as she flitted around with her father's old Canon SLR. When I got back, I bought an SLR and started learning photography.

Two years later, I returned on a similar mission trip, this time as the trip photographer. I know now that I still didn't know much about photography, but I owned a better camera and I put a lot more care into what I was doing.

The most fun I had was shooting the children, who came for Bible school during the day and often came around other times as well to watch the gringos work on their new church. I was frustrated by the way they all bunched up and posed for the camera whenever I pulled out my SLR.

On the day this photo was taken, instead of using my 35mm SLR, I used my Mamiya twin-lens reflex and 3200-speed film to shoot the children. They had obviously never seen a TLR before, and other than giving me some curious looks, they paid me no mind, letting me shoot them as they were and not posed. (The fact that I wass using the waist-level finder, and therefore appeared to be looking into my navel rather than through a camera lens, helped immensely.)

This is one of my favorite photos out of the entire trip because of the selective focus, the tonal range, and the girl's expression. One of my friends agreed and asked me to enlarge it for him, which let me see how well Delta 3200 enlarges to 20x30.
