The Sultan Süleyman Bridge is located about thirty-six kilometers to the west of Istanbul along the main road to Edirne. Spanning 636 meters over the natural channel that connects the Büyükçekmece Lake with the Sea of Marmara to the south, the bridge was built beginning 1563 by Süleyman I (Kanuni Sultan Süleyman or Süleyman the Magnificent, 1520-1566) during his Szigetvar campaign. A stone bridge built by the Romans and restored by Mehmed II allowed passage further north prior to the construction of the current bridge by head-architect Sinan. Sinan also designed a small complex on the eastern bank of the channel for Sokullu Mehmed Pasa that consists of a fountain (çesme), caravanserai (kervansaray) and a small mosque (mescit) known as Sokullu Mehmed Pasa Mescidi or Köprübasi (foot of the bridge) Mosque. The bridge and the complex were completed a year into the rule of Süleyman's successor, Selim II (1566-1574).

The structure also known as the Büyükçekmece Bridge consists of four sections that individually ascend and descend carried on arches, resting on artificial islands placed in between. From east to west, the first two sections have seven arches each, followed by a five and a nine-arched section, with four-centered arches varying from 4.5 to 11.9 meters in width. After choosing firm ground closer to the seabed to span the channel, Sinan laid hexagonal artificial islands with thick retaining walls for during low tide. Lead was poured into caissons dug into the seabed prior to filling the foundations to create a stronger foundation.

The bridge carries a two-lane cobblestone road that is protected with shallow stone barriers on either side. The first section at the eastern end has two stone balconies at its apex that project over the river carried on stone braces. The forth section, to the west, has two inscription panels facing each other on either side of the road. Composed in Arabic, the southern panel offers praise to Süleyman I and Selim II and gives the date of construction. Mimar Sinan, who is referred to as Yusuf bin Abdullah in this panel, also has a signature to its side displaying this alternative name that is only mentioned in an early version of his monograph, Tezkiret-ül Ebniye. The northern panel is in Turkish and announces the completion of the bridge by Selim II.

A highway bridge was built to the south of the Sultan Süleyman Bridge in 1950 to accommodate intercity traffic. The historic bridge was restored in 1970 by the Turkish Highways Administration and is closed to traffic.

Yasin.

Nice sunset light on the bridge, Gurkan, in a nicely composed image with the bridge creating a nice diagonal. Nice inclusion of he trees on both side and the little silhouettes of people walking on the bridge are very interesting. Well done!

I'm glad this bridge has no autos, it is a work of art and deserves to be used by those on foot. I like the note explaining it. One evening or a morning with a wonderful sunrise/sunset, this could only be the better shot. Thanks for the look.

Thanks for this big, and many other thanks for the note; I really appreciate.

Woooh Gurkan, it looks sooo good, soo good composed, I like the lightness here very good.
A really very effective image.

Hi Gurkan,

Great shot here, night pictures
they are wonderful, I adore the view, taste
of the arches, of the hole contemplated in the water
if it turns a whole ball. Wonderful lights.
Congratulations

Sérgio

What a wonderful capture of shape, colour and reflection. The evening skies with the trees silhouetted against them is just beautiful. The glowing lights from the bridge are gorgeous reflecting in the calm water. I also like the shapes of the boats along the riverside. A really great composition, beautiful and serene.
Cheers Joan
Thanks for your visit to my gallery and for your remarks on my photo.

Great reflection and very great colours contrasting each other. Be carefull not to place the main subject close to the centre of the image - it might become static. The noise in the sky also adds value to the mood of this image.

Hi Gurkan,
The warm lighting of the ancient bridge works so well with the the blue tones of the night..!
A very well composed image, pleasant framing by the trees...
A very moody photograph!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Great low light shot!
The image is slightly noisy though..but the lighting on the bridge makes it look interesting.
Nice work.
Best regards, Daniel

Bu köprünün bir belgeselini izlemiştim.Sanırım bir harikaymış. Fakat her alanda olduğu gibi mimaride de değerini bilmediğimiz çok şey var.Sanırım Mimar SİNAN yapmıştı.Gerçi Not kısmında da belirtmişsiniz. Güzel ve anlamlı bir çalışma. Teşekkürler.

Kerem

a beautiful shot, Gurkan! It looks like there is a lot of "noise" in this shot. Did you try shooting at a higher F/stop with a longer exposure time? Regardless, the shot has a lot of character and is fascinating. Great job!

A magnificient composition with a mixure of warm and cold togather in one shot. Glow of bridge sections togather with its reflection have been synchronized and shot beautifully. Good control of luminar quality.

Thanks for sharing an aesthetic shot.

good use of the light and composition gurkan :)
noise level is a little on the high side but only minor...
good night photo :)

Well composed picture and lovely colours in the bridge and reflections.
Thanks for sharing
