I just noticed that Lara (rychousmama) posted an ikat picture so I thought I'd counter with one that I shot at the same time. We're both in an art history class studying textiles, and our well-traveled professor brought in various textiles that he has collected.
This silk is from Asia. It is is an ikat design. Ikat is a resist technique, like batik or tie-dye. For ikat, you set up the threads on the loom, then tie them together in bundles to dye sections. Then it is woven, giving it the textile the cool pixelated-edges effect that you see here. Ikat is most famous in Indonesia, but the technique is used in other parts of the world as well.
I also took a landscape picture of this textile as well, I'll post it as a workshop and you can tell me which you like better. |

Beau travail sur la texture. Tons et couleurs agréables. J'aime bien !

Dear Sarah,
This is a nice picture of great idea.
I love the colors pattern lines and the way you arranged them.
Best Wishes,
Jay.
Nice version of an ikat picture! I like all the layering that runs across the composition and the vertical cropping compliments that. Great detail! You can almost feel the texture of the cloth and I like the use of low lighting here.

Hi Sarah,
Lovey colors and textures present in this shot. I like how the layers push the eye to the bottom of the shot and then back up to settle on the yellows and blues. Both are fascinating and beautiful, but I prefer the landscape version (since you asked).
All the best,
Karen
