Forum Romanum Poppies…

Looking outside my window today I felt a bit down. The sky is grey and dull, no view to cheer up. So I checked some pictures to cheer me up. Found this one, totally out of the (Dutch) season. This photo was shot in Rome (my precious city) at the well known archeological site the Forum Romanum. In the WS here you can find a photo with the Forum partly shown. These flowering poppies showed up between the ruins of ancient Rome. You can see an ancient fallen pillar in the background lying as nice contrast against the crispy green and reds of Mother Nature. This cheers me up. I’m ready for the rest of the day. Lets rock & roll!

PS-talk:
Just cropped and framed. That’s all folks!

Poppies

A poppy is any of a number of showy flowers, born one per stem, belonging to the poppy family. These can be enjoyed in the wild, but are also grown for ornament. There are white, pink, yellow, orange, red and blue poppies; some have a dark centre. The centre has a whorl of stamens. Poppies have 4–6 petals. Prior to blooming, the petals are crumpled in bud.

Poppies may be found in the genera: Meconopsis (Himalayan poppy, Welsh poppy and relatives)
Papaver (Iceland poppy, Oriental poppy, Opium poppy, corn poppy and about 120 other species)
Romneya (Matilija poppy and relatives) Eschscholzia (California poppy and relatives) The pollen of the oriental poppy, Papaver orientale, is dark blue. The pollen of the field poppy or corn poppy (Papaver rhoeas) is dark blue to grey. Bees will use poppies as a pollen source. The pollen of the oriental poppy, Papaver orientale, is dark blue. The pollen of the field poppy or corn poppy (Papaver rhoeas) is dark blue to grey. Bees will use poppies as a pollen source. The opium poppy, Papaver somniferum, is grown for opium, opiates or seeds to be used in cooking and baking, eg. Hungarian Poppy seed rolls.

The poppy of wartime remembrance is the red corn poppy, Papaver rhoeas. This poppy is a common weed in Europe and is found in many locations, including Flanders Field. In many Commonwealth countries, artificial, paper versions of this poppy are worn to commemorate the sacrifice of veterans and civilians in World War I and other wars, during the weeks preceding Remembrance Day on November 11. It has been adopted as a symbol by The Royal British Legion in their Poppy Appeal.
Poppies are used as emblems on tombstones to symbolize eternal sleep. The golden poppy, Eschscholzia californica, is the state flower of California.

Hi Hans, Deze is mooi!
Het lijkt een bloemenplaatje uit een nederlandse weide, alleen de pilaar kun je niet thuis brengen... En dan kom je er achter dat ze in Rome ook klaprozen hebben......;)

Hello, Hans,
Your photo shows a very beautiful combination of ancient antiques and fresh flowers. I really love the red of the poppies.
Today we don't have nice weather here, so your photo cheers me up as well :)
Thanks for sharing and have a nice day!
Regards, Evgenia

Fris en fleurig . Zo veel mooier in de natuur dan in een vaas!

Nice shot. I like the WS alot too. Man, those romans sure knew how to build monuments.
It's grey and dull here too.
Pierre

Very pretty flowers & shot. The California poppies are very beautiful, especially if you go out to the country where there are fields of them. Out of points for the day.

Hi Hans,
Nice composition : coloured renewing flowers along a fallen column, remain of an ancient building. Hardness of marble opposite to tenderness of fresh flowers...

Last spring I tried to get pictures of poppies but was not successful in obtaining a good one.
Nice mix of colours with the carved stone behind.

Hi Hans,
Nice shot indeed, if you think about it it's a great contrast. A pillar from 2100 years ago, a flower that only blooms one day.
Nice idea to do a WS to show what the Forum Romanum really is..
Good thing you feel better after checking some pics of the Great City! :)

Hello Hans,
NOW this shot is certainly cheery ! We too have had much grey over the past weeks. Your poppies look so good here. Love the color mix and details- especially with the background. TFS Julie

Very nice vivid colours, interesting compo, original idea. As usual, excellent framing. Very good.
