[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I captured these kittens peering at me from inside a tire... they were as gray as their "nest", except for their blue eyes. They were recently acquired by a neighboring horse farm, to help control their mouse population.

Their ability to camouflage with their environment will hopefully improve their odds for a longer lifespan, as outside kitties around here, unfortunately, are often preyed upon by coyotes and owls.

(Added after Peeotr's observations): I purposely over-contrasted the kittens, as a way to illustrate how exposed they were in their environment, and as an analogy of how hard their lives were living outside here (needing to hide from the coyotes and owls). Rather than a "cute" and "soft" feeling, I wanted to portray their harsher reality. And I accentuated their eyes to show their personality "spark" in this monotone setting (gray cats within a gray tire). Does this make sense? Thanks for feedback.

Photo: Cropped, removed color, pushed contrast, filled eye color, USM, framed.

I think the frame is a bit too noisy, especially near the kittens, Jen... and the green is not what I would have chosen. Other than that the B&W is a good choice, to leave their eyes in colour is a good idea. TFS.

I think I´ve done a great job with this picture.Excellent choices you´ve done(removing color, pushing contrast and filling eye color). The composition is also excellent! And the cats are gorgeus!(Well, I just love cats!!!)

Very nice capture Jennifer !
They are lovely :o)
Congratulations

Very good observation and composition. The eyes color looks like you played with it, but I find no reason for this... I have also impression you oversharpened and overcontrasted this photo (overexposed cats). These are my impressions. Regards!

Piotr

Beautiful photo! I like that you removed all the color, just made the eyes blue. It really draws attention to their sweet expressions.

Beautiful shot and PP work. But I must say I'm curious about how it originally looks like. The one thing I have to object is the frame. But it's a subjective opinion so it's not really important. I just like it simpler.
Everything great, after that! Very nice shot!

Hello Jennifer, this is sooooooooo cute ;)

Decisive moment, great eyes... you have the eyes of a cat :P

Mario

I like how you put a lot of thought into the way your photograph should evoke your ideas behind it, how it conveys its message. That said, I think you did an excellent job. The black and white coupled with the strong contrasts and those stunning blue eyes really does make them pop out, they look almost other-worldly or beautiful compared to the worn, thrown-away tire surrounding them. That dramatic natural sidelighting is really effective in making their eyes glow and creates stunning contrasts. Great detail and clarity, you can really sense the textures of the tires and the fur and their whiskers. The placement of the cats at the side is good, and they balance with the brighter part of the tire at the left. I might recommend perhaps shifting the point of view just a little to the left facind them so that the top cat is a little bit more near the center or left rather than the right (so that it can balance with the other cat). Hope that made sense. Great unity and compo with the curve of the tire bringing the eye around the shot and back again. I have to agree with Dingo that the frame is a little distracting since the photo itself is just so powerful and incredible. I love how the cats just stare back at you. TFS!
