This piscture has nothing to do with a volcanic eruption. Here is how I did it.

I had a piece of glass that I put horizontally on a frame. Below the glass I had a 1000 watt lamp. On the glass, in a small area I poured a small quantity of blue indian ink. Then after about 10-15 seconds I poured some yellow indian ink. The contact of the two inks led to two different reactions. One was the difference in temperature between the hot blue ink and the cold yellow ink made the two inks react one against the other. The other one was the fact that the two inks had two different kinds of chemical components and when mixed, they did not merge so easily. The dots you can see, which look like stones in the air, were due to the fact that the yellow ink was not clean (it was an old small bottle of ink and probably the ink was out of date if we can say so). The bottle had inside many small particles in suspension in the ink which came on the glass when I poured the liquid, and travelled through the blue ink.

The pattern or shape of the color mix is totally unpredictable. I tried many times until I got this one that I found realistic and simulated a volcanic eruption. I have many more outcome and if you are interested to see them I am quite happy to upload them in the gallery.

Then I had my camera ready, vertically fixed and perpendicular to the glass. The camera was equipped with a long macro bellow plus the 55 mm Nikkor macro lens. The lens was about 3-5 centimeters away from te glass.

Then I took the picture with a small aperture (f32) and a speed of about 1/125). It is important that the camera is already all set above the glass on a tripod, mounting it upside down. Because the chemnical reaction between the two inks takes only a couple of seconds. So as soon as I poured the yellow ink on the blue ink, I had to take the picture.

I do not recall what was the amplifying ratio but it was at least 1 x 1

As I normaly like more the regular photography, it must be a masterpeace.
Thanks for sharing.

Your experiment has worked well. At first I thought it was a piece of coral breaking away from a reef, but then I studied your note.
Very good work, and I admire your patience for this. Very well done.

Me gusta el color y la composición. Muy buen tabajo y una forma muy buena de obtener una imagen abstracta. Felicitaciones

Excellent processing, François. Very creative, and it seems very realistic to me. TFS and thanks for the extensive note.

I already had this one in my favorites but I never commented on it. It's quite a setup you had to capture this and the results are fantastic. The vibrant orange contrasts well with the blue. I think the photo could have worked in the vertical position too and reinforce the feeling of eruption. TFS.

a great experimental shot. The colors and tones are simply amazing. I like how the colors fade out on the edges going from one region to another.
Great macro work.

WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
i really thought that this is a real volcanic eruption! it's really like burning! it even has dust or something. what a brilliant idea! excellent color combination (orange and blue) and great composition (with the biggest dust as the subject) i like too the darker blue at the corner area.
increditable!
selina

awesome. would not have known how u did it without the notes. Thanks for sharing. The result is amazing. Almost like real.

Création originale et étonnante. Le jeu des formes, des textures et des couleurs confère à cette image dynamique et beauté.
