Windmill De Kat

Specially presented for all cat lovers: the Dutch windmill at the Zaanse Schans: The Cat (De Kat)! This mill doesn’t let you sneeze Sweety! While busy with my aging filters a had a problem with posting this beautiful mill from the Zaanse Schans in an aging presentation. So I decided to post the original and the aged one in the WS. When I took this shot ten days ago the it was beautiful sunny and clear weather. Please let me know should I have posted the aged photo or do you prefer this one?

PS-talk: Increased brightness and saturation slightly (+5) , cropped and framed.

De Zaanse Schans windmill De Kat (The Cat)

Processing raw materials to make pigments. In 1646 paint windmill 'De Kat' was built at its present day site on the Zaan, later to become part of the Zaanse Schans. In 1782 the mill was destroyed by fire but was rapidly rebuilt again. At the beginning of the 1900’s, when windmills were being replaced by steam engines, the mill was demolished to the height of the platform. In 1960 the eight-sided paint mill 'De Duinjager' was removed from its former position owing to urban development and placed on top of the old storehouse of 'De Kat'. The mill is once again grinding raw materials such as chalk to make pigments for paints in the traditional time-honoured way. (Text: www.Zaanse Schans.nl)

Dutch Windmills

The Netherlands is so closely associated with windmills, that it's often the first fact people recall about the country. The Dutch built windmills for many centuries (and to some extent, the windmills built the country itself, since without them much of the land drainage could not have occured). In that time the mills were developed for corn milling, land drainage, saw milling, and in fact all manner of industrial purposes. Despite this widespread use, Dutch mills are in may ways quite primitive - using canvas sails, and turned to wind by hand (as distinct from the automated mechanisms that were developed for English windmills, including the fantail, and shuttered sails).
There are a very pleasing number of remaining windmills in the Netherlands - the number is about 1150 and rising, in that the Dutch only count complete workable mills, and in the past 10 years especially many extensive rebuilds have occured to add to this number.
Note: Many of the sites that cover Dutch windmills are themselves only written in Dutch. You can use the online translation service at WorldLingo to provide automated translation into English.

hihi.... 'k plaag je maar hoor.
't is gewoon weer een plaatje!

Groet,

Very representative of your homeland. Nice work on both.

O.k... o.k... back to the photo....hehehehe...

I like the green strike on the building... they look very "show off" great colours, textures, details and of cos the pov is just beautiful! you have done a great job with it... ummm... but something is missing.... what is it? ummm... let me see.... you have the subject... title.. name..OH...I know... where is your postcard frame? That's the famous "Hans' Framing".... put it back!!! :P without it, it don't feel Hans at all....hehehehe....

Hans,
Excellent, I wish we had windmills here. Your colors, details and sharpness make this such a pleasing photo. Thanks for the notes too. Julie

Hello, Hans,
Honestly speaking, I prefer the colour version. It would be pity not to show those beautiful bright colours which you have captured. The red spot on the door stands out very well. Very well composed and presented (by the way, I have been on that terrace as well :)
Best regards, Evgenia

Hi Hans,
A superb composition on this classic scene. The color version is much better for me. Vibrant rich color saturation and sharp detail. The only thing missing now is the fields of different colored tulips. I would love to visit your county some day to take these classic shots.
Scott

Yep! dat iz one nice photo ther podna! Excellent shot, love the windmills! I missed this yesterday! where were ya?? Down at da waterin' hole?? sippin a tall boy??

Hi Hans, great view of a splendid windmill, great composition with wonderful colors, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Hans. Possibly one of the best windmills seen on this site for a while. Excellent POV / cropping and good clarity and colours. TFS. Murray.

Hello Hans,

That for us is a beautiful postcard of the mills of Netherlands. Visual and beautiful wonderful composition.

Sells his main page, in the square of the map of the location of the members, I see that you already visited all of the countries, it is only in white Brazil, I think it is time to visit him in this time of the year, in the Carnival.
Congratulations for the beautiful presentation.

Wind mills are among the legentds of Netherlands in my country. And the image in view is simply splended. Beautifl colors, fine details and proportionately balanced point of view are the value added attributes. Well done my friend.

Hi Hans,
I very much like this picture--bright colors, clear, and well-composed. I can even see each piece of black-painted wood in the siding. Did you paint the trim green in post-processing, Mr. Green Baron?
This one is great in color, but I really love the aged photo in WS, Hans. I guess it's just my preconception of windmills that makes me prefer it.
Thanks for sharing both of them!
Take care,
Karen

Een van je beste! Jammer dat het 'van achteren' is genomen maar twee dikke punten later. Groet

Hi Hans

Fantastic shot of the windmill, graphically superimposed against the blue sky. Good sharpness, colour, & pov. Tfs!

Hi Hans,
I remember this windmill and Zaanse Schans, beautiful place. It looks a traditional Dutch shot with warm sun light enhances the colors and details.

Well done

Out of all your posted work this mill caught my eye. I think some puffy clouds would make it even more beautiful than it is. The color and composition are wonderful. Thanks for sharing this wonderful shot.
