This morning Pam (Coasties) and I set off very early (5am), to welcome Queen Mary 2 into Auckland...along with half of Auckland I might add... We decided to go to Cheltenham Beach on Aucklands North Shore, where we expertly (lol) took nite/early morning shots using our tripods... and then drove on further to Devonport into the traffic Jam... to see this massive beauty steam up our Waitemata Harbour and Dock at Jellico Wharf in Auckland city.

Unfortunatly she is TOO big to fit into our overseas passenger terminal, hence here she is docked at a CONTAINER terminal (much to the disgust I would imagine of the onboard passengers that have paid a pretty price to cruise on her.)

She is the BIGGEST vessel to come into our Waitemata Harbour in Auckland.

This photo taken from on board a ferry from Devonport to Auckland City.

Some info on Queen Mary 2:

Cunard Line has announced that New Zealand-born Captain Christopher Rynd will be at the helm of the magnificent Queen Mary 2 when she arrives in Auckland on her history-making inaugural visit on February 17, 2007. He will take command of Queen Mary 2 when she departs Fort Lauderdale on her maiden world voyage on January 10, 2007.

The 151,400-ton ocean liner will be the largest cruise ship ever to visit New Zealand when she arrives in Auckland 37 days later on Saturday, February 17. Thousands of Aucklanders are expected to turn out to watch Queen Mary 2’s arrival, while many more are expected to flock to the waterfront that evening to enjoy a fireworks display at 10.20pm, coinciding with her departure. Details of the timing of Queen Mary 2’s visit, the fireworks and vantage points are also listed on the new website, along with background information and images of the liner.

Launched in 2004, Queen Mary 2 boasts 10 restaurants, five pools, the biggest ballroom at sea and the first planetarium at sea. New Zealanders keen to follow Captain Rynd on the maiden world voyage can enjoy the cruisecam available on Cunard’s new website www.queenmary2.co.nz aterfront that evening to enjoy a fireworks

Hi Dawn. This is a good intoduction to this huge ship. It is due in Sydney on Tuesday so hope the weather is suitable like yours for this fine composition. TFS. Murray.

Huh ... you were there too, eh?

Actually I was across the other side, Mechanics Bay ... but WHAT a sight it was. You're right, there were thousands along the waterfront!

I haven't gone through my shots yet, but this one is a beauty, well done - nicely composed and well metered, sharp and quite breathtaking!

Bonsoir Dawn,
Great Picture of the QueenMary2,I love how you take this picture with a different angle by the sea. Colors, sharpness and composition are great..Well Done ..

I disagree with the others, I don't think this photograph is well composed. To much water in the foreground, the ship is at an awkward angle. I have seen some of your other photos, and this is not up to your normal standard. Did you get any other photos of this ship? I would like to see them if you did.:)

Lars

Nice work Dawn, next time close in a little more IMHO
Good weekend

You and Pam are competing for the best shot and having fun doing it, The traffic jam was the only reason I was not there, This is a good shot, though I prefer a threequarter front view, you have to take what is offered , don't you? maybe you will get a good one tonigh, hope so anyway.

Hi Dawn,

So going nautical when can we expect your first aviation picture? (birds, bats and butterflies don’t count ;) I agree with Lars remark that there is quite a lot of water in the FG but further it is a magnificent photo. Sharp and great colours nice capture particular the small boats around this majestic ocean steamer which gives a really good impression about the huge size of the 'Queen'.

Anyhow I like this photo very much my dear Dawn and it deserves a LOL-smiley and not a vexatious one :)

Hans

Be patient no more :) but I'll be back!

Looks like I missed a good morning - but I did have a good sleep in Dawn.
I was hoping you two would put your pics up together.
Good POV from down low in the water, was this before or after you spent hours at teh Food and Wine Festival???
She's a monster boat, isn't she - thanks for sharing,
Janice

Pretty big floating skyscraper hey ?

Lovely composition Dawn. The watercolor is indeed much nicer than our cold October waters up here, when she came in Quebec City.

She is big indeed, but not the biggest anymore... (LOL!)
I am looking forward to see more of your last photo hunt (^_^)
Take care and have a great weekend !
Robert

So that's where you've been hiding my adventurous Kiwi Lass!!

Waiting for the QE2 to arrive! (^_-) Considering the difficult conditions and that you were not driving the ferry (^_-) I think you did very well! The POV gives us a good scale as to how large the QE2 is! I expect to see some fireworks when she returns!

Well done
Constantinos

Interesting to note that she won't fit the passenger terminal Dawn, she navigates the Derwent quite comfortably and berths not far from where the Sydney to Hobart Yacht race finishes. Well composed with the ship lying against the city background and showing smaller boats and yachts to give a better idea of her size. Well done and TFS,
David

Hello Dawn.
Great capture. Very impressive.
Another one for my theme collection ;)
Loos great to me and I did just small workshop. Have a look please. Thanks and Best Regards
J-23

be back with ;)

Hello Dawn -
I knew Auckland is a smaller example of the big cities in the world - but never thought it could look that small. Houses and other boats look like toys.
Very well seen and done. TFS Thomas ;-)

Hi Dawn,
This boat is huge! I know you tagged it as transportation, but its like photographing a building ;-) Wow! I know there has been some comments about the POV and the composition, but I rather like the effect of the long lead up to the ship...it has, to me, the effect like you are boating along and you slowly realize that something enormous is in your path...well done. The details and lighting are brilliant as well. I'm looking forward to more shots. Cheers, Todd

Hiya Dawny,

I see you got down there in time to catch the QM2, Its massive isnt it. I actually saw a clip of both the Cunnard ships (QM2 & QE2) entering Sydney on TV. They looked great together, the TV presenter here said that the QM2 wouldn't fit under the harbour bridge either?
See!! not everything big comes from America :))))

Very nice capture Dawn
