While taking photos of the horses at the horse barn from my post yesterday, Red Barn, I imagined this horse saying “No more photos, please, the paparazzies won't leave us alone, can't we get any privacy!” Silly thought I know, sometimes for whatever reason horses will curl their lip at you. I was some distance from the horses so that I could get a full shot of the barn. I think the horses came over to be fed, and since I wasn't doing any feeding this horse choose to show me what he thought of me.
Flehmen Response (lip curl) in Horses
Most of us, at one time or another, have seen a horse tilt up his head and curl his upper lip in a "horse laugh." Although the expression is amusing, it actually has a practical purpose, writes Karen Briggs in the February edition of The Horse. The posture is called "flehmen" (roughly translated it means "testing"), and it appears to help horses trap pheromone scents in the vomeronasal organs (VNOs) so they can be analyzed more closely. Pheromones are the chemical signals emanating from other horses (and on occasion from humans).
After a horse draws in the organic odor (by several seconds of olfactory investigation), he curls up his lip to temporarily close the nasal passages and hold the particles inside. Then an upward head tilt seems to help the airborne molecules linger in the VNOs, which are located under the floor of the horse's nasal cavity.

Hello Dayna what a funny shot and an unusual looking horse great writeup. I would recomend a closer view of the dentures :-) TFS rgds Necip
I'd like more contrast and sharpness. I think you had to use a larger aperture; 1/18 is too small; it underexposed the photo and gives too much detail in background which looks distracting.
P.S. At first sight I thought it is a hyena.
Hi Dayna
To much detail in front and rear and not enough on the horse, at first look he look like a lama, bizarre that horse, do you know what kind? but it's a funny shot;)
Tiger
I admit i never saw the teeth of a horse presented like that! it look like a denture he stole from another one and taking it into is mouth :)
He have a very special shape! Like a poney but i dont know if it's the angle... Look short, round, massive neck! Like a mix between a ram and a horse.
The light angle make the fence very evident :)
I like the result! Very different :)
Oups! out of point! C U Tomorrow
