Hi Vandana,
You did right ! With that background, the light is just perfect on you and the colours look very good. I think the picture is a little bit out of focus, very slightly, but enough to notice it. Maybe the short deep of field created it. But that little thing is saved by the presence of the model herself ! TFS.

Hello Vandana,
This is a very nice autoportrait and I like the lighting and the colors, Your pose is excellent also with the inclusion of one hand which is always interesting. My only nit pick is the focus, it's very important in a portrait that the focus be on the eyes. In this one it is just a little bit behind.
This is a great first autoportrait.
Cheers.

Hi vandana,
First of all, you are not ugly, but rather very beautiful.
I like this capture and great exposure with the bounce of flash.
You face looks kind of slightly out of focus because you probably ran a brush tool or something. I only know this because your hair in tak sharp, you smile is just very pleasing and the catch-light in your eyes do tell us about the flash.
Nice ski tones as well.

David

Hi Vandana
Well, first things first - you're gorgeous! You make a beautiful subject, you're so lucky that you can be your own model.
From perspective of the lighting - it's good, especially in regard to the bounced light for your hair, that works beautifully and does a lot to bring out the curls of your hair in front of that perfect black background. The front-on light is a little harsh, I presume it was fixed to your camera: I've given up trying to use my camera's flash for portraits. (If ever you're interested, check out my lighting setup. It's very cheap and very basic but it works!
Regarding pose and composition - it's nice. You look a little tense, even anxious - waiting for the timer to go! But that is simply a case of being more relaxed in front of the camera. (That means more self-portraits please!) The shoulder adds a lovely sensuality to the portrait. I'm not sure about the hand/arm - mostly because it has reflected more of the flash than your face, and so risks dominating the shot.
The soft filter is undoubtedly flattering but you're beautiful enough to survive a portrait without it. I'd like to see the honest truth in an autoportrait (but that's just my personal preference.)
I hope all of this is useful, I'm quite passionate about portraits and I think you have done a lovely job here!

Hello Vandana
You should use this self portrait as your introductory picture in your profile. The lighting is well balanced and the image is sharp but soft at the same time.
It must be hard in a self portrait to get the focus where you want it so I consider this portrait very good.

You made lovely job of it Vandana, a touch of the soft-focus technique I think works very well in this situation. A good choice of background, and the lighting, though subdued and a little flat, suits the situation and pose very well. Next time perhaps, direct the chair at a 45+ degree angle to camera axis so that you have to turn your head and shoulders a bit to look into the lens. Try this and see if you like the outcome.
Finally: My compliments to the beautiful model!
Best wishes
Bill

Hello Vandana its a lovely self pic fine expression great skin tones and well composed I think a nit pic would be to try mounting the flash off the camera for a less central illumination well done pretty model :-) tfs rgds Necip. sorry P.T. been busy
Hi Vendana,
Just one thing that's not quite right here I'm affraid my friend. You use the word "ugly" in your note. This is definately wrong as you look beautiful to me and I bet your boyfriend thinks so too (he's a lucky fella) :)
The CS2 book is obviously teaching you well as this self portrait shows, the lighting is very good but perhaps your right arm is catching a little too much of it. As Rew says.. it is at risk of drawing our eyes towards it and away from you, as you are the subject.
I've done a quick WS for you, I hope you don't mind and like the result.
Very well done on your portrait shot here vandana, a great first attampt. I should really do a self portrait on myself for TL but being far from the best looking bloke on the planet I'd need all my CS2 skills to make me look any good :)
A good place to learn more about CS2 and its different features is here Radiant Vista I've known about this place for a while now and have downloaded many (60+ I think) video tutorials which have been very helpful. There's a new tutorial each week, just click on The Photoshop Workbench.

Hello Beauty.
Gorgeous 'selfportrait'.!
A reall pleasure to look at. As most girls from India, the kindness is on your face. In the middle east I did work with many Indian guys and met some of the wifes too. Their hospitallity was great. Good memories i have.
Thanks for your comments too.

This is a very different Vandana than the one Ann and I met in Belgium and Holland - and I have photos to prove it ;o)).
Excellent auto-portrait, Vandana. Very glamorous, but not overdone. I particularly like your casual pose. Light is fine too.

hi vandana,
reading and trying. not bad for a first time. like to comment:
make the same pose again without the right hand, print both and see with one you like best after a week. (my guess: without)
use powder to avoid any gloss on the face
use a flashlight that is not on the camera but somewhere left or right.
try artificial light (adjust the ISO on the camera - who cares about some noise if there is with the D70s ) in stead of a flash and let the light come from upright or up left.
continue the series and post your results on TL ...
regards frans
